Siting nineties underground music as his muse Riccardo Tisci has created a iconoclastic explosion—the personification of elitist disdain, what one would imagine if a couture gown were torn up and reimagined by an anarchist street kid. Layering and texture stand centerstage in this lineup, with a rebellious streak that is expressed in tulle, sequins, zippers and pearls. From pearl lined skirts to zig zagging zippered coats and pants, to micro cropped moto jackets and over-sized sequins, the out of the box touches lend an air of uncertainty. Clashing prints and asymmetrical lines further the unease, while playful ruffles in red, pink and white lend a sense of playfulness. Add super-sized lace up boots, star branded knee high socks and a variety of reimagined pumps and you have a revolt of the most fashionable kind. Perhaps a sign of the times but this is one collection will not go quietly in to that good night.

Satiny metallics collide with tulle trimmed ruffled sleeved frocks, zig zagging stripes intermix with dark florals and iridescent snake skin prints

Ruffles, lace and florals, a gorgeous trio of romantic details with a bohemian ethos that celebrates the free-spiritied beauty of the feminine mystic. With hemlines long and flowing and layers of gossamer like materials wrapping the body in an enchanting collaboration of contrasting textures. Satiny metallics collide with tulle trimmed ruffled sleeved frocks, zig zagging stripes intermix with dark florals and iridescent snake skin prints. Extra wide cut sheer floral trousers, lace infused peasant blouses tops, and asymmetrical one shouldered garments add to the feeling of independence and off kilter beauty. Glitter sandals and fishnet ankle socks are the sparkling finishing touches on this wonderfully charming collection. I must say I am a big fan of this collection and if I had my way I would own all of these pieces.

The new word in town certainly has to be maximalist. As we have seen in the last few Lookbook Fridays minimalism seems to be on a bit of a hiatus. A need for change, or perhaps an expression of rebellion in a tumultuous political landscape on the word stage, but designers are embracing a no holds bar frenzy of lavish details and leaning in to sumptuous beauty and decadent extravagance.

Though Roberto Cavalli never strayed too far from this corner stone of opulence, so it should be no surprise that Peter Dundas’s offering for Spring 2017 is an expression of all that is romantic and free spirited. From velvet and lace to fringe and fur, the emphasis is on texture. Add to this embroidered denim and satin, layered ruffles of broomstick skirts and dresses, embellished details and tapestry finishes and you have a tactile celebration of exquisite means.

The combined effort is one of lavish freedom, and resplendent pleasure

Hemlines are long, long and long with flowing maxis, flared high-waisted trousers, and bell bottom jeans, it’s all about the illusion of what is, or what could be. Prints also take center stage in this collection with boho florals intermixing with polkadots, stripes, and animal prints and co-mingling in a palette that spans the rainbow from sun flow yellows and tangerine to corals, to jewel toned purple, to fiery reds and the more neutral tones of black, cream and rust. The combined effort is one of lavish freedom, and resplendent pleasure. I mean, seriously who does’t need a mint green floral embroidered suit in their lives.

altuzarra pre-fall 2016 for lookbook friday

Fashion - alimackin@gmail.com - December 9, 2016

Yes it is party frock season again. Time to step out in one’s finest and most glittering of apparel. And although this line up is from Altuzarra’s pre-fall collection many of them could easily be worn for a night out on the town.

Yes it is party frock season again. Time to step out in one’s finest and most glittering of apparel. And although this line up is from Altuzarra’s pre-fall collection many of them could easily be worn for a night out on the town. And though the hemlines may be long and just below the knee one would hardly describe the dresses in this lineup as modest.

With plunging necklines, clingy silhouettes, and body con wraps the female form is celebrated in a sophisticatedly sexy embracement of sensual expression. With a palette of typically in season black as a base, the looks are balanced with fiery reds, yellow, peach, and a corn flower blue to keep it feeling flirty and youthful.

From the slip dresses to the sequined bomber jackets to the slinky head to toe evening gowns and the sinfully gorgeous stiletto bootie pumps this collection comes along just time for a much needed holiday season

And with layers of over-sized sequins, happily clashing pattern mixing and peak-a-boo lace the over-all aesthetic of this collection is a revelry of sumptuous textiles expressed in beautifully drawn lines and just the right amount of sex appeal. From the slip dresses to the sequined bomber jackets to the slinky head to toe evening gowns and the sinfully gorgeous stiletto bootie pumps this collection comes along just time for a much needed holiday season.

Fashion - alimackin@gmail.com - December 2, 2016

If the layered look is your thing then you will be over joyed with Jil Sander’s latest offering. With a boxy, non body con silhouette, even the more structured looks are not what one would call curvaceous.

If the layered look is your thing then you will be over joyed with Jil Sander’s latest offering. With a boxy, non body con silhouette, even the more structured looks are not what one would call curvaceous. Layering is central to the collection and feels a bit off kilter, with a trend setting spirit that embraces the girl who walks against the tide. No pandering to the boys here that’s for sure.

With below the knee hemlines to over-sized skirts and slim fit slouchy pants the pieces in this line up offer comfort, sophistication and an edgy style you can still wear to work. From the A-line denim skirt, to the asymmetrical short sleeved, color-blocked trench to what can only be described as a peplum cargo vest; the out of the box garments peppered throughout this collection offer us the chance to step outside our comfort zones.

put them together and you have a contemporary collection that seamlessly blends a sporty aesthetic with an independent and defiant spirit

While the safer pieces like the traditional cut slim fit trousers, tweed pencil skirts and long cardigans keep us rooted in the familiar. But put them together and you have a contemporary collection that seamlessly blends a sporty aesthetic with an independent and defiant spirit.

Paris in the seventies—romantic, rebellious and always fashionably chic, was a mix of sophisticated smart elegance and a free-spirited boho wanderlust. It was a transitional time much like the changing of the seasons when we transition from one way of living to another. And Sonia Rykiel’s pre-collection for spring 2017 embraces this duality with the same sense of elegance, grace and restless adventure. Smart tweed suits of black and white checks were equally at home with peasant shirts and broomstick tiered dresses.

Belts are big and command attention in a quiet nod to the eighties

Long A-line coats play well with poet sleeved tops and swingy off the shoulder frocks. Belts are big and command attention in a quiet nod to the eighties. And trousers are lose and flowing, wether paired with gauzy casual blouses or more formal button downs and reflect the kinetic vibe of the collection. And many of the looks feature Roma inspired beautiful takes on the traditional bandanna and they can be seen with everything from the traditional suits and off the shoulder dresses to the less conventional cropped jacket ensemble. Throw in a leopard print sheath dress, a side split knit skirt, and a fabulous studded bag or two and you have one eclectic, romantic collection that is at once sensual and smart. A comfortable minimalist androgyny is the heart of Nili Lotan. Creating wearable relax fit pieces that hang on the body with a sleepy sensual elegance, her garments reveal the strength of the woman beneath them. Citing Patti Smith and Joni Mitchell as inspirations, this understated silent strength should come as no surprise. The collection for fall was aptly title Blue 1971 but in her offering for Resort 2017 I am detecting more of a nineties edge with a bit of nod to the eighties. The wide cut man tailored trousers have given way to dropped waist harm style pants and jackets have gotten edgier and more playful in fluffy bombers and fringed motos. Her quintessential slip dress is also present and can be seen a variety of colors and textures from velvet to leopard print to her trademark satin. And the feminine factor is expressed exquisitely in a plethora of filmy chiffon blouses of black lace, camouflage and pale pastels. An olive green parachute coat grounds the collection and warm knit sweaters add a touch of utilitarian charm—and help to round out this line up for Resort’s in between seasonal whims.

For this week’s Lookbook Friday I am happy to introduce you to a new line of sustainable tees from an up and coming company called Kestan. Kestan was launched by Stephanie the blogger behind the blog Sartorial Diner. I met Stephanie a number of years ago and it has been so exciting to watch as her career takes off. In the past I have collaborated with Stephanie, and even produced a photo shoot for her lookbook line sheets for her graduating final project. I had a wonderful time working with her and it does not surprise me she is going after her dream and finding success.

After graduating from Parsons with a degree in fashion design Stephanie headed off to Germany to work for Esprit She was one of a handful of graduates chosen by the company to help them relaunch their brand in the United States. And I happily followed her on her journey as she ate her way through Europe documenting all her favorite watering holes on Sartorial Diner.

Don’t you love when people follow their dreams and commit to making the world a better place?

Since completing her tenure with Esprit Stephanie has returned to the states where she now lives in the sunny city of Los Angeles. Inspired by her time at Esprit Stephanie decided to go for it and launch her own line of clothing. Her latest offering —a line of sustainable organic cotton tees are not only super cute and fashion forward, they are also good for the environment and are made right here in the U.S. Don’t you love when people follow their dreams and commit to making the world a better place? I am just happy to say I played a small part in Stephanie’s bigger story.

A striking A-line silhouette dominates this left of center collection. Creating a streamlined cascading effect with many of the garments featuring extended dropped waists and fitted streamlined cuts above the waist. This is balanced by traditional body con pieces and fitted straight cut knit dresses as a nod to the leisure inspired track suit dress. On the opposite end of the spectrum there are uber wide fit trousers, dropped waist peplum and tiered ruffled skirts. Graphical prints of polkadots contrast with florals while fishnet, feathers and embroidered details lend an air of edgy rebellion. Prominent laced up “fasteners” and over-sized tie closures are the hallmark of the collection and add a dimension of unexpected sex appeal. A simple palette of white, black, gray and red keeps the emphasis on the deconstruction element of the lineup, while also allowing the textures to take center stage. And with out of box takes on the OTS trend and layered asymmetrical one of a kind pieces, this is one collection that won’t be easy to forget.

Sophisticated grown up rock and roll may sound like an oxymoron but with the new collection from Thomas Wylde you can have it both ways. A splendidly lush collaboration of edgy yet elegant pieces that are at once deviantly youthful and smartly polished. Zippers, studs and Swarvoski crystals adorn everything from fur lapel over coats and wool scarves to leather pants and moto jackets. Leather is prominent through out the collection and adds a touch of hardness to the softer elements of satin suede and fur.

speak to the ultra feminine aspects of the line up and give it a decidedly smoldering sexy I’m With The Band charm

Flowing printed shirts, ruffled bomber jackets and a lingerie inspired top speak to the ultra feminine aspects of the line up and give it a decidedly smoldering sexy I’m With The Band charm. With a palette of red, white and black and the occasional appearance of a jewel toned blue and a subdued maroon tweed this collection is a darkly ambient celebration of primal basics. Throw in a track suit or two and you have a fresh modern round up of uniquely independent yet eclectically approachable clothes.
