Today we are looking at Wild Foxe’s summer 2017 Starlet lookbook. Similar in vibe to Nasty Gal but decidedly less rock and roll and bit more gentile if you will. Again this is a line up for the super young but like Nasty Gal there are always pieces that can work when not styled for the “teen” market.

From the cropped ruffle sweater top, to the off the shoulder flared bottom jumpsuit to the slouchy long sleeved pull overs and graphical tees these are pieces that can be dressed up or down and for almost any age.

And can we talk about that hat? How did they find my grand mothers old clothes anyway?

I could totally see that ruffled top with high waisted flared jeans or a pleated midi skirt and the over-sized checkered man tailor top looks super cute with these micro paper bag shorts but it could look equally as fetching with a pair of skinny jeans. Right? And the pineapple dress? Oh I so see that as a peplum top. And can we talk about that hat? How did they find my grand mothers old clothes anyway? To see more from this cheeky lineup head to Wildfox.com.

Laura Mercier Tightline cake eyeliner a new way to get the in look

Fashion - alimackin@gmail.com - May 24, 2017

Show of hands, how many of you struggle with liquid liner? Liquid liner is a big trend right now and I have attempted multiple times to join this trend. But in addition to liquid liner not being the easiest to apply it also does not work well on thinner skin or older skin. And my skin is definitely on the thinner side, so yes the struggle is real.

All eye liner but liquid eye liner in particular can show ones age due to that it can make crepeiness more apparent, even if it is not that bad. Pencil liner is more forgiving and much easier to apply but it tends to wear off in a few hours—at least it does for me.

in addition to liquid liner not being the easiest to apply it also does not work well on thinner or older skin

So the other day I popped in to the new Blue Mercury store near Grand Central to pick up some new mascara, but I also walked out with Laura Mercier’s cake eye liner. Really you say? Yes.

I met a lovely makeup artist who works for Laura Mercier and we got to talking and I explained to her to my dilemma. She went on to tell me about Laura Mercier’s Tightline Cake Eye Liner. I have never tried cake eye liner, I just lumped it in with liquid liners and assumed it would be a no go. However I was pleasantly surprised by the results.

But with cake liner you use a very thin flat brush and then you dot in or press in it along the last line

With other liquid liners you are “drawing” on the line. With either a pointed brush or a pen like applicator. But with cake liner you use a very thin flat brush and then you dot in or press it in along the last line. You are not drawing it on, which is definitely easier.

Laura-Mercier-Cake-liner-blue-marine

It does take some practice though, and you will most likely have to use a magnifying mirror, but once you get the hang of it you will wish you had discovered this sooner. I love that I can get the liquid liner effect and I really love that it stays put and does not fade.

It comes in six shades including black, but the makeup artist steered me to the Bleu Marine which reads as black when applied, but it is less harsh on paler skin. I have yet to do a cat eye with it, still learning the ropes but I hope to soon.

Use micellar eye make up remove to clean your brushes. This works wonders and is not harsh on your brushes

*And an ALLIE NYC exclusive insiders tip? Use Micellar eye make up remove to clean your brushes. This works wonders and is not harsh on your brushes. I had already used this brush multiple times so it was stained blue but a few dips in the micellar water and it looked like I had just taken it out of the package. I used a micellar water from Simple  which I picked up at the drug store.

And yes I also walked out of Blue Mercury with mascara as well, the item I had originally intended to purchase, I went with this defining mascara which doesn’t clump and it also doesn’t flake—a problem I had with the mascara I had previously been using. So it was good day for me, two great products and a whole new look!

Shopping in & Other Stories is a treat. I love the open airy spaces that their stores are known for and I like the casual chic down town girl vibe of the clothes. They have a lower to mid-range price point and carry shoes, accessories and makeup in addition to apparel, and they also do collaborations. And for summer 2017 they are collaborating with the iconic retailer Tom’s.

Simplicity and effortless style is something I think almost all us aspire to in one form or another. And the casual chic trend is still going strong, with it’s hallmark lived in aesthetic and slouchy vibe this is fashionable fad that is easy to do. And within this trend there is the counter trend with it’s distinct preppy inclination or rather the coming together of these two trends that brings us to the scrubbed clean down town girl bonne ambiance.

A singular approach with a quiet strength that breaths new life in to the idea of the gamine

And Theory has captured this bonn ambiance perfectly with their resort and spring line ups for 2017. With their clean lines, relaxed fits and emphasis on natural fabrics and unfettered pieces these collections are a brilliant yet understated embodiment of the female form. A singular approach with a quiet strength that breaths new life in to the idea of the gamine, or the woman who approaches fashion with the same ease that she approaches life.

Pattie’s Retro Chic Style on the east end

Style on the street otherwise know as street style as we all know is so having a moment. And this is one of things I enjoy the most about shooting and blogging. So a few weeks ago when I was shopping in Sayville and spied Pattie her lovely retro look I just had to stop and snap her. She had just stepped out of the vintage boutique Paper Doll Vintage and with her beautifully patterned dress in pink and white, her show stopping yellow hat and red and white saddle shoe pumps she was a breath of fresh air admist everyone else’s decidedly more dreary duds. Add a mid-century red patent leather bag, an over-sized pearl necklace and crystal bracelet and Pattie’s winning smile and you have one retro chic young woman.

Originally from Las Vegas Pattie moved to New York to study at Columbia University to pursue a post bachelors degree. She currently has a degree in research and experimental psychology and worked in the research field for many years. But vintage style and retro fashion has always been a passion for Pattie. She credits growing up in Las Vegas for sparking her interest in the the glam looks of the nineteen forties, fifties and sixties. In particular the nineteen fifties which were especially quintessential in regards to Las Vegas.

As teens my best friend and I would often dress up like Marilyn Monroe, Bettie Page, or Jane Russell

She says “As teens my best friend and I would often dress up like Marilyn Monroe, Bettie Page, or Jane Russell. As I got older I found photographs of my great grandmother, and her style has inspired me as well.” Pattie also states that her style has been evolving and recently “I have been steering more towards a thirties-forties look which I believe has been inspired by my curiosities of The Great Depression and World War II. History has become more interesting as I’ve gotten older,”

Pattie currently works as a live in nanny and also sells vintage on the side, spanning the eras from the nineteen twenties to the nineteen nineties. And her passion for vintage fashion is obvious from her wonderful style. So glad I got to meet and shoot her!

A touching mothers day video from hey claire

Fashion - alimackin@gmail.com - May 15, 2017

Today in lieu of Mother’s Day I am sharing with you a touching video from the Vlogger HeyClaire. Claire goes well beyond the skills of your average vlogger, and I think she may even have full length feature film in her. She definitely has mastered the art of story telling and in this simple but powerful video with nothing more then a few old photos, a wood board and a camera she creates engaging, touching film that keeps the viewer interested which is quite the challenge in this era of the thirty second sound bite and ten second attention span. But be forewarned it may make you tear up.

I am a big fan of Miu Miu, though it is often outside my price range. I love the quirky aesthetic and emphasis on color and texture. And the pre-fall line up embraces this doctrine in a retro-esque homage to the classics of the past while injecting a decidedly modern approach to the pieces. With a nod to the nineteen twenties and more then a nod to the nineteen fifties this collection celebrates the more traditional silhouettes when one didn’t have to show a lot of skin to feel fashionable.

Often expertly mixed and matched the looks here are an eclectic yet approachable ying-yang tug and pull of classic quirky attitudes

Quite a departure from the lookbook we looked at last week. Though just as a feminine, this lineup is at once flirty and has a bit of a tomboy feel. From tartan to gingham to tweed and checks to florals and leopard print patterns are central theme to the collection. Often expertly mixed and matched the looks here are an eclectic yet approachable ying-yang tug and pull of classic quirky attitudes. From the head dresses to the shoes, can we talk about the shoes? I have so wanted a pair of these for quite sometime. One day, one day…

A Day Shopping, Dinning and Strolling on the east end of Long Island

Fashion - alimackin@gmail.com - May 10, 2017

Here is my second video using Filmora. This time I shot it on my DSLR with the kit lens that came with my camera. It is only a wee bit better then my phone. Though definitely trickier with the focus. Some of the footage my friend shot is bit out of focus. I should have set the shot up for her. I don’t know too much about focusing when shooting video, need to do some research.

I also used a separate microphone this time, and not the one that is built in to the computer. I used the Snow Ball iCE microphone and it is better then the one my computer but you still need to be fairly close to it. In the instructions it said in the input sound settings to set it to very low as the microphone is very sensitive.

it is better then the on board mike, and at $49.00 it’s not breaking the bank so it will do for the time being

OK, I did not find this to be the case at all. When I did this I could barely hear the audio. I had to turn the volume all the way up in both the sound preferences on my computer and in the Filmora software. But it is better then the on board mike, and at $49.00 it’s not breaking the bank so it will do for the time being.

Well I hope you enjoy this video of my day out on the east end of Long Island. And stay tuned for more videos…

Hands up, who is watching Girl Boss on Netflix? I just started watching this, after months of relentless and exhaustingly frightening and depressing news stories I needed a break. And this sun filled romp through the west coast late nineties truly is a much breath of fresh air. Not perhaps the most realistic approach, but with its’s sunny cinema photography, throw back sound track and stellar performance from Britt Robertson it is quite addicting.

But who said we had to be “appropriate” all the time? I think we all may have a bit of a rebel in our souls

So in honor of my latest Netflix crush we are looking at Nasty Gals Spring 2017 line up. Yep we all know Nasty Gal is not everyone’s cup of tea. And much like it’s founder it is very in your face and some may say a bit crass. But who said we had to be “appropriate” all the time? I think we all may have a bit of a rebel in our souls. But seriously though, all these pieces worn together may be a bit much for you, but who says you have to wear them together?

And my favorite—the gold satin kimono mini dress with faux fur sleeves would look super chic over a pair of black trousers

The burgundy floral bomber is quite the show piece and would look great with a pair of high waisted boyfriend jeans, a simple white tee and pumps. And my favorite—the gold satin kimono mini dress with faux fur sleeves would look super chic over a pair of black trousers and open backed ala Gucci slip on loafers. Right? And yes the Daisy Duke halter top may be a pass for me, but I would certainly say yes to the tone-tone button up jeans, patchwork skirt and studded vest. What say you? Would any of these pieces make in to your wardrobe?

Blogging, Vlogging and being a full time mom how do they do it?

Fashion - alimackin@gmail.com - May 3, 2017

I have spoken on the blog before about how difficult it is to run a blog while having a full-time job. During the week I leave the house at eight AM and usually return home around seven thirty in the evening. So a fairly long day. But I could not imagine running a blog full-time with a young child, that has to be challenging. But many people pull it off, as does Chriselle Lim of The Chriselle Factor, who is a blogger, vlogger and a mom. Whew, I got tired just typing that!

No, Chriselle’s life may not always be glamorous but it certainly is charming—no argument there. So be sure to watch this touching video about how Chriselle’s daughter Chloe has impacted her life and the day to day joy of raising a child. Not always easy, but always rewarding.

Yes, yes, as many of you may have figured out I am developing quite the You Tube addiction, so expect to see more of these posts. But its research! It’s research!
