Happy Friday everyone, can you believe we are half way through the summer? Kind of sad but it also means we heading towards a new season which means new clothes to buy, attending Fashion Week and getting ready for the holidays. Not all bad right? I am excited to buy fall clothes so I was quite happy to discover the fun new label Avec Les Filles. Avec Les Filles was founded in February 2017 and currently they are selling through Macy’s and are a “shop within a shop”.

With the free-spirited millennial in mind the collections of Avec Les Filles seeks to bring together the traditional Parisian school girl of the 1970’s with a contemporary so-cal vibe suggesting an ease of life style with an urban flair. From romantic pussy bow blouses and ruffle tops to streamlined strapless frocks and Chanel inspired separates to what can only be described as an “overalls dress this line up is fresh, youthful, and has just the right amount of demure femininity. The perfect balance of minimalism and artful details Avec Les Filles is going to be a go staple for seasons to come.

A non surgical nose job—Really, it’s a thing.

Fashion - alimackin@gmail.com - July 19, 2017

Happy mid-week everyone. Yes we are half way through the week and halfway through the summerI know I should be sad about this but truth be told, I am kind of not. And I am kind of over sweating and being hot all the time. Thank God the office I work in is like a meat locker—I love it. Any how, today I had wanted to share a video I shot last weekend when I went to City Point in Brooklyn. However, thanks to Canon I got a bit of a late start so I couldn’t finish it before I had to leave for an appointment. Ugh.

When I woke up this morning the thought occurred to me that I did not recall seeing a USB cord in the box with the G7X. So after my coffee I reached for the guide book that came with the camera and had to flip all they way to the end for the “Connect With Wifi” section—Oh God, *insert eye roll here*. I have to connect wirelessly? I did not see this going well, and sure enough it did not work.

I got through all the steps which took about 45 minutes and then the camera could not “find a device” and by device I mean my computer. Apparently it is a problem with the OX Yosemite. Um OK. Luckily there is a Best Buy a five minute drive away so I popped over and picked up a micro USB port for $14.99.

It took me a whooping ten seconds to plug in the USB and then the videos downloaded quickly without a problem.

Seriously if Canon can’t get it together to make sure it’s software works with all operating systems it should at least include a $15.00 USB cord with the camera. I mean, really? That said though, I still think a USB is better then transferring wirelessly. It took me a whooping ten seconds to plug in the USB and then the videos downloaded quickly without a problem. So if you buy this camera be sure to also pick up a micro USB cord.

So instead, today I will sharing with you a video I have been wanting to share with you from another popular vlogger named Lydia. She has found wild success with her vlogging and she is know for being very open and upfront in her videos, which is kind of an anomaly for a Brit.

I would have not believed it if I had not seen it with my own eyes

In this video she speaks candidly about not being %100 entirely pleased with her profile. And she takes us along on her…wait for it. Non surgical nose job. A what? Is this thing? Apparently it is. You have to watch this video. It is a bit long, but Lydia is also quite engaging so it goes fast.

But I was stunned by the difference, or more pointedly that there was a difference, and all the doctor did was give her an injection in her nose. I don’t get it. I don’t get how this works. They do not go in to detail on the hows, but wow, I would have not believed it if I had not seen it with my own eyes. The intern at work said she had heard of this. Crazy. Let me know what you think. What’s next? I can only imagine.

City Point A Day out in Brooklyn in a Loft Maxi

City-Piont-Brooklyn

New York is an ever changing place. From it’s inception New York and has been changing and evolving, be it good or bad it does not stay the same. And New York’s most recent facelift in downtown Brooklyn is the newly minted shopping mecca—City Point. My friend Angela and I decided to check it out this past Saturday, and it is, as one of my coworkers would describe it—a millennial paradise. Take that as you will it was fun place to shop and stroll about. Stay tuned for a video on that.

It was quite hot and humid so I reached for a maxi dress almost the only thing I can wear when it is super hot. I picked this one up at The Loft, I love their maxi dresses as they are made from a very light weight wrinkle free material. This one has a wonderful floral pattern and I also picked up a pair of trousers in the same pattern.

I love the color and it is made from a water resistant material that kind of looks like leather but not quite

The sunnies I picked up at Forever 21 they look a lot like the pair I lost from Quay Australia—still bitter about that. No wear near the quality of Quay Australia but they will do in a pinch. And the bag is also from Forever 21. I do not generally shop in Forever 21 but I popped in to one the other day on my lunch break as it was super hot and I needed an excuse to get out of the sun.

I spied this over-sized shopper and was surprised at how expensive it looked. I love the color and it is made from a water resistant material that kind of looks like leather but not quite. It is huge, I was able to fit my DLSR camera, an extra lens and my new Canon G7X vlogging camera in it, along with all the usual things I keep in a bag. Perfect for a day out shooting. Looking chic while getting things done—priceless.

Summer in NY, yes it can be hot, and many times I would rather be at the shore, but the city can also be a magical place in the summer too. People spilling out of sidewalk cafes, the long days and golden sun sets—plus it tends to be a bit less crowded and the perfect time to shoot. This past weekend I met up with a photographer named Marina who I met through Instagram. I had been following her feed and discovered she lived three towns over from me. How cool is that? Definitely one of the upsides of social media. After following Marina for about a year on Instagram we met last winter during NYFW, we were attending the same show and she recognized me from my feed. But this weekend was the first time we met up to shoot.

We headed to Soho were I got my hair braided at Birch Box by the very talented Karina Sanchez. I love their hair and makeup services — you can get an updo or braids done for only $30, how cool is that! With these super dramatic over-sized ruffles I knew having my hair up was a no brainer. And speaking of the top, this top was gifted to me from Shein and I must say I think I knocked it of the park with my choice of this show stopping stunner. I had numerous people stop me in the street to ask me where I got it.

And with the fashion forward braids, Kardashian worthy top, my fringe heels, and Marina following me about with a telephoto lens I kind of felt like Kim Kardashian

And with the fashion forward braids, Kardashian worthy top, my fringe heels, and Marina following me about with a telephoto lens I kind of felt like Kim Kardashian. I paired this top with these high rise flares from H&M but it would look really good with a skirt too, and I just may do this for fashion week. The bag is from BCBG and the sandals are from Zara which I picked up last summer.  The necklace I picked up at Oh La La a few months ago. Remember the video? This gorgeous top retails for $17.85 if you can believe that. So if you want to stop traffic like I did be sure to head to Shein.com. And tell them Allie sent you!

Link Love Express # 10 All about Cameras

Fashion - alimackin@gmail.com - July 3, 2017

Happy 4h of July weekend everyone. I did not have a four day weekend and I am working today. But we do get a half day so I am looking forward to the mini break. I know I have spoken on the blog in the past about purchasing a new camera for vlogging and I have done quite a bit of research on vlogging cameras. So in todays Link Love Express it is going to be all about cameras. Each link either reviews the G7X or compares it to other cameras.

After all the research I am going to go with the Canon G7X, I had also been considering the Sony Alpha 5100 vlogging camera but the superior image stabilization of the Canon won me over.

It seems the biggest con with the Canon G7X is the onboard microphone and the lack of a mount or port for an external microphone for better sound quality.

the only cavet being that they also block the selfie screen some what when in the flipped up position. Not ideal but better then low audio quality

The quality of the sound on the G7X is not bad but it will never be as good as a direct or shotgun microphone. However the one saving grace is you can by a micro muff from Micromuff.com. These tiny muffs do a great job at blocking wind, the only cavet being that they also block the selfie screen some what when in the flipped up position. Not ideal but better then low audio quality.

The only thing that is making he hold off on purchasing the G7X Mark II is I am worried that the G7X Mark III will come out a few months from now. The G7X Mark II came out in June 2016 and the average is one to two years between upgrades. If I bought the Mark II and then the Mark III came out three or four months later my head would explode.

For many people this is not a problem, but for someone like me with a lot of pink in their complexion this could be an issue

And the only other issue I noticed with the G7X in the comparisons is that the G7X tends to lean towards magenta, while the Sony leans more towards yellow. For many people this is not a problem, but for someone like me with a lot of pink in their complexion this could be an issue. Note the link of the mini muff review. I am not sure if there is a setting on the camera I can change to compensate for this. If any of you have this camera and know of a setting like this please fill me in.

I hope you find this a valuable resource, and I hope you benefit from my research. So grab a cup a joe, pull up a chair and get your You Tube game on.

Raisa & Vanessa Fall/Winter 2017

Fashion - alimackin@gmail.com - June 30, 2017

With more then just a flair for the dramatic, the sister duo behind Raisa & Vanessa create bold and what some call maximalist garments that embrace the female form in a sexy and empowered expression that is not for the demure. With a background in theatre and costume design their audacious statement making clothes are often favored by those in the performing arts and their garments have been spotted on many a celebrity red carpet moment and out and about at fashion week on the backs of the most discernible fashionistas.

And the theatrical statements don’t stop with the clothes, from their lookbooks to their videos and their runway shows Raisa & Vanessa are not afraid to push boundaries. So it is no surprise that the runway show for fall/winter 2017 roars down the runway in a decadent, unapologetic over the top observance of all that is extravagant and sumptuous. See for yourself, this is one show where I dare you to find one patron typing on her phone.

And Other Stories Sheer Midi Skirt and a mix of old and new

Today’s post is a mix of old and new where I mixed older pieces with some newer ones. This weekend I headed to a town on Long Island called Huntington and met up with the blogger behind the blog Shy Biker. Huntington is a lovely town on Long Island which is quite different from the town where I grew up. It has more of west coast city vibe to it with subtle hills and lots of boutiques, cafes and restaurants, and it is super pedestrian friendly which is nothing like the more working class south west shore, which is all about strip malls and driving.

It is a nice town to escape to and I had wonderful time meeting up with Ralph who treated my friend and I to a wonderful lunch at a local Indian Fusion restaurant. After lunch my friend and I shopped a bit and I scored a BCBG cross body for $39.00, and you can be sure this lovely gem will be making an appearance on the blog in the not too distant future. I was going to wear a pair of jeans with an over-printed star pattern and a striped button down blouse. But it was a bit too warm for that so I opted for this sheer midi skirt from & Other Stories and this super comfy tee from GAP. Perfect for the warmer weather—not to clingy.

I then added this acid washed denim jacket from I Love H81 and the ankle boots from Crown Vintage and a slouchy boho bag from Sondra Roberts

I added this J Crew necklace which I wrote about last week. I then added this acid washed denim jacket from I Love H81 and the ankle boots from Crown Vintage and a slouchy boho bag from Sondra Roberts. The aviator sunnies are from Loft. I usually do not like this style on me but these frames are small so they work on my face.

We managed to get this shoot in before it started to pour. I wanted to also shoot some video but the weather was just not cooperating. Oh well. I hope you enjoyed your weekend as much as I did mine.

Estee LaLonde and the changing taboo of What Society considers attractive and the taboos that have not changed

Fashion - alimackin@gmail.com - June 19, 2017

Today I am sharing with you a video from the wildly successful blogger and vlogger Estee Lalonde. Many of you probably know who she is, and some of you may even follow her. She recently came out with a book called “Bloom” in which she speaks about body shaming and consciousness.

One of the upsides of blogging and vlogging is the more diverse representation of what we as a society consider attractive. You see many more woman of color and from ethnically diverse backgrounds. And unlike the world of high fashion not all vloggers and bloggers are super thin.

But on other hand there are still some things that have not changed. Most of the super successful bloggers seem to have certain types of features and most of them are in their twenties. It seems you can be less then svelte, you just can’t be old. And let’s be honest, most of the popular bloggers and vloggers don’t have features that are considered less desirable. None of them have hook noses, or an undefined chin or bad teeth. They don’t break out in to a wide smile to reveal yellow or crooked teeth.

There is a lot science that can go in to the study of what features we respond to as a society in a positive way, but most models regardless of race and ethnicity share very similar features. They generally have very little space between the end of their nose and the tops of their mouths.

They also tend to have large eyes, full mouths and pronounced or full cheeks. And sadly a lot of the more successful influencers share similar characteristics.

They also have very small chins—that is the space from the bottom of their lower lips to the end of their chins is very small, and they tend to have higher foreheads. Most models foreheads are or appear when photographed to have foreheads that are in ratio, three times higher then their chins. Look through most fashion magazines you will see what I mean. They also tend to have large eyes, full mouths and pronounced or full cheeks. And sadly a lot of the more successful influencers share similar characteristics.

So it seems for all that’s changed somethings have remained the same. What say you?
