And Other Stories Sheer Midi Skirt and a mix of old and new

Today’s post is a mix of old and new where I mixed older pieces with some newer ones. This weekend I headed to a town on Long Island called Huntington and met up with the blogger behind the blog Shy Biker. Huntington is a lovely town on Long Island which is quite different from the town where I grew up. It has more of west coast city vibe to it with subtle hills and lots of boutiques, cafes and restaurants, and it is super pedestrian friendly which is nothing like the more working class south west shore, which is all about strip malls and driving.

It is a nice town to escape to and I had wonderful time meeting up with Ralph who treated my friend and I to a wonderful lunch at a local Indian Fusion restaurant. After lunch my friend and I shopped a bit and I scored a BCBG cross body for $39.00, and you can be sure this lovely gem will be making an appearance on the blog in the not too distant future. I was going to wear a pair of jeans with an over-printed star pattern and a striped button down blouse. But it was a bit too warm for that so I opted for this sheer midi skirt from & Other Stories and this super comfy tee from GAP. Perfect for the warmer weather—not to clingy.

I then added this acid washed denim jacket from I Love H81 and the ankle boots from Crown Vintage and a slouchy boho bag from Sondra Roberts

I added this J Crew necklace which I wrote about last week. I then added this acid washed denim jacket from I Love H81 and the ankle boots from Crown Vintage and a slouchy boho bag from Sondra Roberts. The aviator sunnies are from Loft. I usually do not like this style on me but these frames are small so they work on my face.

We managed to get this shoot in before it started to pour. I wanted to also shoot some video but the weather was just not cooperating. Oh well. I hope you enjoyed your weekend as much as I did mine.

Estee LaLonde and the changing taboo of What Society considers attractive and the taboos that have not changed

Fashion - alimackin@gmail.com - June 19, 2017

Today I am sharing with you a video from the wildly successful blogger and vlogger Estee Lalonde. Many of you probably know who she is, and some of you may even follow her. She recently came out with a book called “Bloom” in which she speaks about body shaming and consciousness.

One of the upsides of blogging and vlogging is the more diverse representation of what we as a society consider attractive. You see many more woman of color and from ethnically diverse backgrounds. And unlike the world of high fashion not all vloggers and bloggers are super thin.

But on other hand there are still some things that have not changed. Most of the super successful bloggers seem to have certain types of features and most of them are in their twenties. It seems you can be less then svelte, you just can’t be old. And let’s be honest, most of the popular bloggers and vloggers don’t have features that are considered less desirable. None of them have hook noses, or an undefined chin or bad teeth. They don’t break out in to a wide smile to reveal yellow or crooked teeth.

There is a lot science that can go in to the study of what features we respond to as a society in a positive way, but most models regardless of race and ethnicity share very similar features. They generally have very little space between the end of their nose and the tops of their mouths.

They also tend to have large eyes, full mouths and pronounced or full cheeks. And sadly a lot of the more successful influencers share similar characteristics.

They also have very small chins—that is the space from the bottom of their lower lips to the end of their chins is very small, and they tend to have higher foreheads. Most models foreheads are or appear when photographed to have foreheads that are in ratio, three times higher then their chins. Look through most fashion magazines you will see what I mean. They also tend to have large eyes, full mouths and pronounced or full cheeks. And sadly a lot of the more successful influencers share similar characteristics.

So it seems for all that’s changed somethings have remained the same. What say you?

The power of a winning smile and the secret struggle of those who hide their best asset

Fashion - alimackin@gmail.com - June 12, 2017

It has been brought to my attention more then once that I do not smile often in my photos. And my regular readers know that I don’t smile in photos because I do not like my teeth or really even my smile itself. When it comes to good health and good teeth I did not get lucky. I will spare you here the story of my health issues, but if I could change one thing about myself (not including my health) it would be teeth/smile.

After your eyes, your smile is the next thing most people notice. And having a less then stellar smile may seem trivial to some, and maybe it is, but to those who are the not so proud owner of a less then stellar smile it can be a bit daunting at times to live in such an image focused culture.

living here in the states the struggle is real for those who are less well endowed when it comes to their teeth

Seriously look around. In The States it seems it is all about having a winning whiter then white smile. A friend of mine whose parents are from Ireland, spent some time living in Scotland and she said there she is considered fairly attractive but here in the states her smile is considered problematic, and she has had multiple dentists bring up the subject and try to talk her in to improving her smile.

So yes living here in the states the struggle is real for those who are less well endowed when it comes to their teeth. I have thought about laser whitening but due to nerve damage I sustained when I had a root canal done I am very leery about having this procedure done as it can make your teeth more sensitive.

And don’t even get me started on my sisters uber white, perfect Oprah Winfrey teeth

Then there are veneers and lumineers but they are very costly, and can be over ten thousand dollars, not exactly affordable. So here I am with my less then stellar, not even close to white teeth. Perhaps I could travel to another country and get veneers? I am currently using drugstore white stripes and my teeth are about 7-10% lighter (not whiter) which is also a struggle as they don’t fit well due to all my missing teeth and even as a child my teeth were not “white.”  And don’t even get me started on my sisters uber white, perfect Oprah Winfrey teeth.

Yes my fixation on my teeth my seem trivial. And there are much bigger problems for me to worry about, both in my own life and the world at large, but still it bothers me. The young woman in this photo is an activist who worked for Hilary Clinton. So it doesn’t bother me a bit that she has this gorgeous smile. And don’t you love this capture from Garance Dore? Such a beautiful photo. To read more about this inspiring woman head on over to Garencedore.com.

And how do you feel about your smile? Do you even think about it? And if you don’t like it how far would you go to improve it?

What would Grace Kelly look like if she had let her hair down, threw caution to wind and became a bohemian hippie chick? Well she just might look like she shopped at the eclectic collective otherwise known as Doen.

Doen was founded by sisters Margaret and Katherine Kleveland. The company has taken on additional partners over the years to become the vibrant collective it is today. Creating easy breezy wearable pieces with a vintage so-cal vibe and made with fine luxurious fabrics with hand-knitting and embroidery the clothes that they make and sell are flattering, comfortable, affordable and exclusive.

You will find beautiful on trend clothes made by hand from exquisite fabrics that are affordable, ageless and that will last

They are only available on their website www.shopdoen.com and speak to the independent spirit the founders like to foster among themselves as well as their employees, business partners and customers.

Observing how few women there are at the helm of most fashion brands, the founders sought to not only create an empowering and supportive work place for women but also within the supply chain and community. To that end every factory they work with over seas has either a female owner or co-owner. Seriously girls if boho is your thing, be sure to check out Doen. Yes all the fluttery gossamer textures and touches are still there, but added to the mix are over-sized man tailored garments that give the collection a decidedly defiant feel.

Feminine mystic could be an apprope description of Nicky Zimmermann’s offering for Fall 2017, known for creating frilly bo-ho inspired clothing, the look for fall 2017 has a bit more of a masculine edge. Yes all the fluttery gossamer textures and touches are still there, but added to the mix are over-sized man tailored garments that give the collection a decidedly defiant feel.

Said to be inspired by old photographers of collage students in the 1920’s where young woman were depicted wearing frilly dropped waist dresses with boxy mens styled coats over them, this lineup does indeed walk the line between the masculine and the feminine.

Though distinctly more girly then tomboy the collection is a beautifully romantic offering of multi-tired dropped waist dresses balance by boxy elongated mens inspired suits and pretty sensual frocks and overtly sexy thigh-high leather boots.

Ruffled shoulders, tiers of pleats and billowing lace sleeves come together with form-fitting wrap styled dresses of interlocking lace and floral patterned silky fabrics. Add over-sized shearling coats in pale pastels, buttery soft turtle-neck tops and sparkling sequins and this lineup is at once romantic and provocative.

Summer is arriving in fits and starts here in the north east. This past memorial weekend was cool and overcast but there were some breaks of sun so all was not lost. I met up with a friend for lunch and was super excited to wear this crocheted ruffle cropped top from Shein.

I paired it with these patch work jeans from Gap for a casual boho look. The shoes believe it or not are from Forever 21. They are surprising comfortable and I love the low shine leather and metal stud details. The crossbody saddle bag is also from Gap which I got on sale as is the hat.

The top from Shein is great for the warm weather, it is light and breathable and the crochet panel adds a little sex appeal while still being fairly modest. And I love the ruffles and peplum, really taps in that hippie chic look I was going for. It retails for $23.00 which is surprisingly affordable and I am sure I will have this on heavy rotation this summer.

So if you are in need of some affordable, cute go to tops for summer head on over to Shein.com and here’s hoping the rest of the summer will be bit more sunny.

Success, Technology, A Beautiful Editorial and an unknown future

Fashion - alimackin@gmail.com - May 29, 2017

gorman07

Today I am sharing with you a photo shoot from a blogger I have been following for quite a while now and I have also been following her career path. Going from working to other companies as a graphic designer and art director to finding success with her own blog to now art directing photo shoots for other brands with her own company this talented young woman has come a long way in a relatively short time.

gorman08

gorman13

But this got me thinking about the state of things in the U.S and the world and the overwhelming sense of insecurity that so many people feel today. And it seems this sense of insecurity transcends all age groups and income brackets. And from blue-collar manufacturing jobs in red states to white collar jobs in publishing in blue states,

we are potentially creating a future where we have millions of people who are unemployable

it seems that many people are being displaced by advances in technology. And we are potentially creating a future where we have millions of people who are unemployable, and we will literally not have enough jobs to keep everyone who needs to be—employed. And it is particularly acute in the U.S where many people fear old age more then they do death.

gorman14

gorman17

And contrasted with this is the senesce among millennials that they all should be self-employed entrepreneurs. On the one hand they get a bad wrap for being this self-involved, entitled generation of selfie queens and kings, but on the other hand, with so much instability in the finical sector (not to mention politics) and almost zero safety nets for the working man, can we really blame them for wanting to be the masters of their own financial futures?

gorman19

gorman20

gorman29

gorman32

gorman36

Although there can only be so many entrepreneurs in the world—someone has to work for them.  But the bigger problem is there will not be enough jobs to meet the publics needs, and this is going to be a huge problem in the future. But there are some silver linings and positive notes, and here is an example of a talented, hard working, young woman finding the success she deserves. Be sure to click through to her blog DesignLoveFest and read the post, and to see more from the shoot. And check out the Aussie brand Gorman she worked with, pretty cool threads if you ask me.
