What in the Algorithm is Going On?

In this post I am continuing the conversation from my last post. But I will be focusing more on the algorithms themselves. They are certainly influencing (pun intended) our behavior for sure. Much has changed since the two giants YouTube and Instagram came into being. Even before the new kid on the block TikTok showed up the algorithms of the these two giant platforms was constantly changing. Inticially they seemed to change every five years or so and they seemed more organic when it came to discovery.

But over time this of course changed. The biggest sea change was when Facebook now known as Meta purchased Instagram and caused a tidal wave of upheaval. Many long time users complained that no one was seeing their content, no one could figure out what had changed, and everyone was frustrated. The platform became less organic and more competitive, and suddenly you were being encouraged to “promote” your content. And by promote I mean to pay IG to push out your content.

Youtube remained out of the fray, and its algorithm was different, but it too had a pay to play format, that for all intent and purposes did nothing. Trust me, I tried, and it was a you know what show. Just awful. For example I set up one campaign which was about Fashion Week put in all the FW keywords, other fashion related keywords as well as referencing platforms similar to my own which you could do; it was part of setting up the parameters of the campaign.

I mean, they kind of violated their own terms of service

And when I checked the metrics after the campaign ran it showed roughly %70 male users who watched the video just over 30 seconds, which was just long enough for them to click off the video/AD, and for it count as a view. Total waste of time and money. It was obvious they ran it on, or akin to male centric content like gaming videos to get the clicks and views, and did not adhere to any of the parameters I had set at all. I mean, they kind of violated their own terms of service.

Now fast forward to January of 2025 and the infamous TikTok ban and as just about everyone has been saying, the platform is not the same. Many people are saying their FYP is radically different and that they are not seeing the same content they had been seeing before the ban. And on the content creation side everyone except the really big content creators complained how their views completely dropped off a cliff. Along with this you suddenly have all these videos on your FYP telling you how to go viral. Right, so all of sudden no one wants to gate keep, everyone posting these videos just want to help us all out of the goodness of their hearts.

This reminds of last summer when there was some kind of change to the YouTube algorithm

Well if you believe that one there is a bridge connecting Brooklyn to Manhattan and it’s going cheap, hurry and snap it up while you still can. Hmm. This reminds of last summer when there was some kind of change to the YouTube algorithm. There was some chatter about it, but suddenly much like what happened in January of 2025 many people’s views dropped off big time. And just like the FYP, suddenly there were all these videos on YouTube saying “It has never been easier to set up a YouTube channel” or it has never been easier to go viral on YouTube, which of course was so not the case.

It almost seems like all of these platforms got wind of what other one was doing, and all decided to do kind of the same thing via the algorithm. After the TikTok ban there was A LOT of chatter that Meta had bought the platform. This is of course just a rumor, but well, this would not surprise me. It is not official, but TikTok is behaving awful similar to its main competitor. And now, just like said competitor I get messages in my inbox encouraging me to “promote” my video.

After all why should they promote your content for free if you will pay them to do it?

They say on YouTube that only %5 of content creators that post to the platform actually make money. That means %95 do not. I think all these algorithms work similarly: only really promoting about %5 of the content on the platform. The other %95 is just fodder, and hopefully that fodder will pay to play. After all, why should they promote your content for free if you will pay them to do it?

What say you? This photo is from August 2019. A friend and I shot this out east at the golden hour and when we drove down this alley/street and saw all the reeds we knew we had to shoot here. It was shot with my Canon Rebel T3i using a 50mm lens, and I think my friend did a great job. It you want to see more of the shoot click here.

  1. As just a viewer, the biggest change I’ve noticed is on Instagram. My feed is 80% ads. And on Facebook, no matter how many times I click the Hide button on Reels and posts I’m not interested in, they still reappear the next time I open the app. I prefer using TikTok now when I want to veg.

  2. A great outfit, still absolutely beautiful in 2025.
    I don’t understand algorithms.
Well, I don’t make any money from them either. If you want to make money with videos or an account, you inevitably have to deal with them.

I wish you a very nice Sunday

  3. I don’t think we’ll ever be able to figure out the algorithms. I feel like they change daily, and it’s so frustrating. And you’re right, it doesn’t pay to promote your content because the platforms don’t follow their own guidelines, they follow their crazy algorithm. Anyway, that’s a beautiful shot!

    1. Yes totally and I have even heard that if you do use it they stop pushing out your content even more because they want you to use the promote feature again…

  4. No lo sabía. Te mando un beso.

  5. This whole thing still baffles me. I am on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. I think I put most of my effort into Instagram but I still don’t really know what I am doing.

  6. I work in social media marketing too, and I couldn’t agree more with your opinion. The algorithm keeps changing, and we need to continually boost with ads if we want to maintain our existence, whether it’s a business or a personal account. It’s kinda sad, honestly, hopefully they will provide more benefits for the community in the future.

  7. It’s difficult with all social media… You look pretty 😀

  8. These algorithms are just wild! I agree with you, I think they all sort of figure out what the other platforms are doing and then they find their own way to do it as well. I find it so frustrating that it’s as if they don’t want most people to grow, and sadly even if you pay money to promote your content, it can end up like your situation where it didn’t even perform as intended. It’s really unfair. I hope someday that will change. I also think it’s kind of sad that the really dumb videos of people throwing random foods in a pot just for views or for people to comment on them because they’re so wacky – those seem to be the people that end up making all the money and getting their content pushed out versus people with thoughtful content. It really is crazy, haha!

  10. Hello!
    I loved your photo!
I think these social media monopolies are very opaque in the way they operate. They don’t earn my money to promote anything.
In fact, I think these social networks are dangerous for democracy!

  11. Bonsoir Allie,

  12. I haven’t used Instagram in so long, and I had to delete TikTok because I would just spend hours scrolling. However, when I was using Instagram, it did seem like the algorithm was changing all the time, and every other post I saw was an ad. I definitely wouldn’t pay Facebook/Instagram or any other platform to promote my content. Also, that’s terrible that the YouTube campaign didn’t go well!

  13. I so wanted to comment on your last post too but comments are closed, so this comment combines my thoughts between them both ????❤️

I completely relate to feeling nostalgic for bloggings past, lately I have been craving the old-school connection, the sense of community because it was such a wonderfully supportive time in my blogging journey. So many have stopped now and it’s sad.

I feel all platforms have changed and the way we engage with them has also shifted. No one has an attention span longer than 3 seconds anymore it feels as its all so fast paced. It also feels like the platforms that are supposed to help us grow really don’t favour smaller creators at all. I’ve personally been trying to gain access to my Instagram since the beginning of April and no email ever gets answered. I also feel like no matter how much i try to cater the main page to my interests on Instagram or TikTok that it never works. There’s a million ads for things im not interested in and the content being recommended is not to my taste.

The online world feels alien these days.

    1. Yes I so miss those days too, I felt like content creators and their followers had more control now I feel we are slaves to the algorithms.

  14. Beautiful Picture. Love the background. I prefer Tiktoks algorithm. That of Instagram, Facebook etc confuses me.

  16. Thanks for sharing.
I invite you to visit my last post. Have a good week-end!

  17. I feel like algorithms keep getting worse and worse, as if they were trying to banish every user by annoying them! On the other hand, love your outfit! <3

    1. Yes, exactly it is making it so you don’t even want to use them…

  18. I don’t think I will ever understand the updates to the algorithms!

    1. No me neither

  19. I guess that’s how it works – first attract the creators, and then squeeze as much out of them as possible…

    1. Yup!!

    2. Yup totally!

  20. You’re right, Allie! Alogrithms are confusing and ever changing. It does seem like they do not benefit the content creators in the way that they used to many moons ago. The nickel and diming is really irritating. I do my blog for fun, so I’m not too focused on alogrithms and monetization, but it would be nice if both were easier. I always see those “promote your post for $X,” but have never tried it. From your experience, now I know it’s not worth the effort. I’m not even on TikTok! I can absolutely understand the frustration!

Aside from that, great shot! You are a bundle of sunshine! 🙂

PS: I checked out your nostalgia post…enjoyed reading it. You look beautiful! I am a fan of nostalgia too. 🙂

    1. Oh yes don’t use it, from what I understand they will never promote again. And thank you for your kind comments.

  21. I think the algorithm change is everywhere. I see it too on Pinterest and even on Google.

    1. Wow Pinterest too? ugh.

  22. Your commentary here re: algorithms is perfectly framed. It’s frustrating as a content creator not to have your content reach your audience, even if you invest money in a campaign, like you did on YouTube.

This shot of you from 2019 is gorgeous! I love the lighting, your outfit, and the pretty reeds!

    1. I know it truly is frustrating, without content creators these platforms are nothing. They plenty of money via advertising but yet this is not enough they want to also make money via content creators by charging them…

  23. Algorithms are a pain! I’m constantly stuck in the 200-300 view rut on TikTok, it’s so frustrating x

  24. Nice photo 🙂

  25. I love that photo of you. You should print it and frame it.
As for all the social media apps, I have no clue what’s going on…????

    1. Wow girly, thank you!

  26. I loved the photo, it’s so pretty!
This whole social media thing and algorithms are really discouraging. I used to make some videos for YouTube, but I got really discouraged because of the low views… I personally preferred the early social media, where we posted just for fun and not for likes and numbers.

    1. Yes I do miss those days too.

  27. Firstly, I love the shot your friend took with a Canon Rebel T3i. Technology has come a long way, hasn’t it? Well, as far as social media goes, I miss how it used to be sometimes. Less about all the fluff and numbers.

    1. Yes she did an excellent job for sure!

    2. Thank you so much and I miss it too.
