Garance Dore Open Studio Pop Up Shop @ 168 Bowerey in NYC

IMG_1822

H ello all and happy Monday. This weekend I had the pleasure of attending the Open Studio Pop Up Shop for Garance Dore. She was debuting her new stationary line which she created in collaboration with the Rifle Paper Company. It was a cold and very rainy Saturday but I was determined to go, and would not be daunted by the less then inviting weather. Well I was not alone, the forbidding weather did nothing to stem the tide of Garance’s fans who streamed through the door of the studio with dripping umbrella’s and iPhones at the ready. But can you blame them? The pop up shop was divine! Such a triumph of talent, with an incredible attention to detail and a celebration of beauty. Garance’s illustrations are exquisite and her fashion forward aesthetic with it’s lovely organic approach create a body of work that is at once breath taking and endearing.

From notecards to notepads to iPhone cases and prints there was something for everyone. The biggest problem was spending too much money, I heard more then one attendee lament finding themselves in this predicament. The shop was a feast for the eyes with beautifully laid out tables, white faux fur throws, minimalist black shelving and a wonderful balance of a sleek meets rustic vibe. Needless to say the event was a flutter with DSLRs, iPhones, tweets and photo ops. A flurry of Oooo’s” and “ah’s” and “did you see this?” A polite and friendly jostling of eager fans and like minded hopefuls. There was a calligrapher on hand, a coffee bar, and a talk with Garance and fellow Francophile Lola Rykiel—former ballerina and now PR maven and grand daughter of Sonia Rykiel. Such an expected treat! You can see the talk here. It was a truly wonderful way to spend a Saturday and I was glad I braved the rains and attended this memorable event. I look forward to the next pop up, I just hope next time there will be more sun then rain!
