I distinctly remember picking up one of my first issues of Allure Magazine and reading an article that basically instructed the reader to play up one feature on the face while keeping the other features more minimal. Often they spoke about playing up the eyes with a more toned down neutral lip, or vice versa; doing a bold lip and brow, but then keeping the rest of eyes more minimal, ie: no shadow or just one neutral shade. I recall how I really enjoyed playing around with makeup creating different looks adhering to this basic principle.
But minimalist does not mean boring—think smoky eyes, or dramatic red lips with clear sparkled eye lids. And indeed, I think we are moving back towards that editorial approach of less is more, and putting the focus on one feature or the other, with conturing being used minimally or not at all, with the whole idea of a glowing natural dewy face being the focal point of the look.
We have all seen those Tik Tok’s of wildly striped faces buffed into unrecognizable blinking Barbies.
This may be a new or “retro” approach to makeup for us here in the States but French women have always embraced this concept when it comes to makeup. For them it is all about true sensuality and the art of being alluring and looking effortless, and not so much about covering up one’s essence in layers of makeup. It can be hard to find makeup tutorials that feature more natural fresh faces, and with magazines struggling, where does one find inspiration if the over done Instagram look is not your thing? Luckily there are a few makeup channels catering to the lovers of alluring makeup, and one of them, as it should be no surprise is from a French Makeup artist.
I first introduced you to Violette in my Love Link Express series. Violette’s videos’ are super addicting, and her channel Violette_FR is a true testament that minimalist does not mean boring. Her videos and makeup tutorials are anything but boring; and she even started her own makeup line featuring a line of cream shadows that are intended to be used for the whole one and done approach; which is becoming quite popular as of late. I have to say I love this aesthetic, that whole, I didn’t try too hard effortless look, while simultaneously looking ravishingly alluring. Yup, super French. And it doesn’t hurt to be gorgeous. But seriously, watch a few of her videos, you won’t be disappointed, and have a date night coming up? I am sure you will find plenty of inspiration.

I LOVE watching makeup tutorials on YouTube!
I love watching everything from goth looks to stage-makeup, smoky eyes, winged eyeliner,
and some unbelievably artistic and colourful looks!
Some of the artistic looks by KlairedelysArt on YouTube are really wild.
This PINK LOOK by violette_fr is very pretty.
She is very talented and I love the look of the pink eyeshadow,
It coordinates very nicely with herpretty lipstick.
Her tutorial is short and fun to watch (I just watched it on YouTube).
Bext xx 🙂
Oh I will so have to check out KlairedelysArt. Yes she is talented I can’t wait to try some of her makeup!
As someone who doesn’t like wearing a lot of (and sometimes any) make up, I really appreciate your recommendation of this French chic minimalist make up channel. I love the French chic style and the idea of just throwing on a red lip or accentuating your eyes really quickly. Make up can be fun even when it is minimal. For example I love to see creative make up that isn’t overdone, a funky eye shadow or when a person does more artistic and fun make up in general. The super polished & overdone make up look seems exhausting, time consuming and expensive so I was never tempted to try it. I don’t have 90 percent of make up products that are used in typical YouTube make up tutorials so I never attempted recreating any of their looks.
Yes wearing a lot makeup can get expensive and it can make your skin breakout. Though TBH I don’t think a lot of the people doing the all in makeup looks do this everyday. It is more about creating dramatic looks on camera.
Bonsoir!
C’est vrai que je n’apprécie pas de porter trop de maquillage.. Je focalise souvent essentiellement sur les yeux, mais sans trop en faire..
Ceci dit je ne savais pas que c’était spécifique aux français?
Bises!
Ah oui plus que L’America LOL
That metallic shade of pink is so much fun. I really need to step out of the box this summer and try some new shades!

I read a book a few years back, giving tips on French style minimalist makeup.. it’s been my go to look ever since! <3
Thanks for introducing me to Violette. I love the pink look! Playing up one feature and keeping it simple does not have to be boring! Great post!
I loved the make-up of the video!
I love pink eyeshadow, I really want one.
But on a day-to-day basis I prefer a more minimalist makeup. I really like to highlight the lips with lipsticks of strong colors.

Minimalist makeup looks are some of the most beautiful makeup looks. I love makeup, but I don’t wear it everyday especially not as much since the pandemic started.
Super gorgeous. I’ve always liked keeping the eyes more neutral while adding a bold lipstick!!!

I’m a huge fan of learning French girl beauty tips. I always seem to find and learn something ew to add to my own beauty routines. And yes, less is always more and minimalist makeup is so much classier than having a cake face.
haha and yes, those TikTok videos are scrayyyyyyyyyyy. I sued that filter on myself and was depressed for a week haha

I’m someone who likes to keep my makeup as minimal and natural as possible, so this was super helpful!
Hey Allie happy New year. I couldn’t agree more with the minimalist trend and gorgeousness of barely there makeup and I’m loving it. Though with the pandemic now, i don’t wear makeup at all save for lipgloss. The annoying masks!!!. Anyway good to reconnect and glad to see you thriving.
That was a lovely video. and so calming to watch. I don’t wear a lot of makeup but I do love lipstick and blush the most. <3
Beautiful and subtle makeup! Love this video!
Exciting and true post, Allie! I love French women style, but I didn’t notice about their make-up!
Violet channel is so great!! Thank you for sharing<3

Violette is beautiful and I, too, love the less makeup is more approach to makeup. Her minimalist approach is subtle yet chic. I absolutely love it! Thank you, Allie, for bringing her channel to us. It’s been a while, but I hope you’ve been well!

I always love to do minimalist make up, i think make up is actually to enhance your natural look not that gives you complete new look.
I love doing dramatic makeup, but I rarely have the time or energy so I opt for a more minimalist makeup look when I’m heading to class or places like that. Thank you for sharing Violette’s video & I’ll have to check out her channel!
