T his past summer I had a lot of visitors in town: I had my step family in town from Paris, friends came in to town from Seattle and I visited with some friends who also had friends in town, so of course we ended up doing a lot of touristy type things. We headed to the beach—a much missed source of enjoyment for my friends who came in to town from Seattle, shopped A LOT, and we visited the many museums NY is famous for. And it dawned on me that…well…I don’t do this very often. Hardly at all really, and I also realized how pathetic this is. I live in what is considered by many, one of the greatest cities in the world, and one of the reasons it has this reputation, is for the culture and pleathora of museums located on this island of Manhattan. Yet, I average going to a museum once a year —if I’m lucky.
[blockquote] Even if you can’t afford to travel the world, you can take your children to the museum, zoo or local park. And don’t be afraid to take them to grown-up spots. Eating out in a restaurant teaches children how to be quite and polite and gives them the pleasure of knowing you trust them to behave.

Yes, I can blame it on a having a full-time job in publishing, maintaining a blog as a full-time job, and trying to have a social life…not to mention all the other day to day things: like grocery shopping, doctors appoints, hair appointments, family commitments. But still, if I can find the time to shop, to go out for drinks, and to go to the movies, I can find the time to go to a museum or art gallery. Right? Plus, the museums here in NY are not only famous for the art that is on exhibit inside them, but they are sometimes famous for other things. The MET , for example, is famous for being “the steps” that the well-heel teenagers of the one percent and of Gossip Girl fame like to spend their lunch breaks “gossiping” about the travesty of their lives. Kind of cool, right? But infamous mutterings aside, I love this museum, you really feel like you are in Europe when you step inside and it is particularly beautiful to visit during the holidays. There is no way one could see everything there is to see in one visit. So I guess it will have to become a regular haunt for me. And they have that wonderful rooftop bar that over looks Central Park and is THE date night hot spot in the summer! Seriously it does not get more romantic and I bet there have been quite the number of proposals in this spot.

I am happy to report that I already got a head start on my New Year’s resolution and last weekend I headed to the
Brooklyn Museum to see the
Killer Heels exhibit. It was a great exhibit, albite a bit dark, so difficult to take pictures. Hence the lack of a post on this exhibit. The Museum is located in the heart of Brooklyn right off
Prospect Park. It is in one of the most beautiful parts of Brooklyn, and as you can see, is oozing with historical reference. I had a wonderful day visiting this museum and plan on returning in December for the special event and runway show to celebrate the Killer Heels exhibit. And this will not be my last visit to this museum and is actually just the beginning. I also plan on purchasing a membership at the
MET for all the afore mentioned reasons, as well as attending art shows at smaller, lesser known galleries. So wish me luck on my endeavors and regardless of where you live every city has it’s share of galleries and museums, so who’s with me? Will 2015 be the year of the museum?

That’s usually how it is, I usually make myself go to the beach and do outdoorsy stuff in Florida, I always feel like I don’t take full advantage of living there.

I know what you mean working full time and managing everything else not easy but we do manage. The museums is like traveling back in time a place to escape great images.
That Kimora quote is so perfect – I absolutely adore museums {though we definitely don’t have enough of them where I live}.
xx
Oh I definitely think that visiting museums is so important. It really broadens a person’s viewpoint and adds cultural depth to one’s life. It’s great that you’re going to checking out cool places!
I’m totally going to visit more museum’s in 2015. I love love the MFA in Boston and really cannot wait to go again. I also want to go to NYC and visit the MET. Both times I was there was to see a special exhibit so I have never really spent time walking around the MET.
I am so jealous of all the culture there is to experience in NYC! I was too young to appreciate it when I lived there! I need to come visit for the summer and take in some of the sights!

Wow I wish I could have attended the Killer Heels exhibit – I saw some photos circulating online, looks incredible! When I do come to NYC, I always try to visit a museum. I never get the chance to actually go through a whole museum (I think it would take a few days to cover everything, they’re so huge)! I love the peace and serenity in the museums away from the hustle and bustle of downtown.

Good for you! I love the Brooklyn Museum. I usually try to visit the Botanical Garden there at the same time. I also realized recently that we just haven’t been taking advantage of all the great cultural resources in NYC or the pass from my bank that gets us into a number of museums for free and I need to change that.
This is a wonderful New Years Resolution Allie! So many specialty exhibits are shown in NYC. You’re going to love it. Do you frequent the blog NYC Syle and a little cannolli? Rosemary is the blog writer and she has press credentials for some museums. She’s always showcasing them. You should check her blog out.

I don’t do many resolutions, but one of them that comes back every year is to visit a museum at least once a month 🙂 I would love to visit New York and go museum hopping!
I know what you mean…I feel the same way. Here in Vienna we also have beautiful old museums and fantastic exhibitions to see and visit but I only get to see them when I have guests from abroad 🙂 …and it was exactly the same when I was living in London 🙂
….So, Allie, I love your resolution for 2015 <3

Wow! That’s a great new year resolution! The Brooklyn Museum looks amazingly exciting! Even the exterior itself would make you want to go in a have a look around!
Have briefly checked out the website, looks like there are loads of interesting exhibitions going on there. I guess this would be one of my visiting places if I ever head to NYC one fine day!
Thanks for sharing, great post! Shall look forward to more of your museum posts in the future *_^
Killer Heels?? That’s a killer one! LOL
