The Kardashians a modern day phenomenon in which “every day” people share their lives with the world (and get a lot o hate for it) were, so to speak along with all “reality” TV stars, a precursor to today’s influencers who also share their lives online. And for any influencer that gets big enough they too are going to have to deal with the haters. Condemnation of the well known is is nothing new. People who live their lives in the spotlight have been dealing with this for hundreds of years—in those days it was generally royalty. One well known example of this is the infamous “Let them eat cake” uttering Marie Antonette—who never actually said this, but was hated by the French people due to how her persona was perceived by the public.
However, what is new is the ability to share that hate and have it go viral to millions across the globe. I am guessing not always the most fun of experiences. The Kardashians just seem to roll with the punches—raking in a lot of the Benjamins makes it easier to tolerate the hate I guess. It should come as no surprise then, that influencers are not immune to the haters and trolls, so a few months ago when a video popped up on my YouTube cue with the title “The Most Problematic Influencer” or something to that affect I was not particularly surprised. What did surprise me was the person they were speaking about—Ashley of BestDressed.
She spoken openly about her personal life, sex, school, burn out, as well as fashion, design, and day to day activities.
I have been following Ashley for a number of years now, and even though I am not in her age group I thoroughly enjoyed her content, after all I had been in her age group so I could relate. Ashely was fun, approachable and very frank. She spoken openly about her personal life, sex, school, burn out, as well as fashion, design, and day to day activities. Fashion was defiantly a passion for her so much of her content revolved around this topic. She made videos on what she wore, her stye, and how she shopped. She spoke often about wanting to be sustainable, how to thrift, and how to have a fun wardrobe on a student budget. Ashley was also a film student and it showed.
Her videos were not just fun to watch because of her funny, quirky, out going personality, but also for how they were edited and presented. Truly a joy to watch. So I was quite dismayed when all the hate to got her and she went dark. As in %100 dark. She is not posting anywhere: not YouTube where she started, not Instagram and not TikTok.
Now, lets’ talk about why exactly she is getting all this hate. Like I said when I saw the video was about Ashley I was genuinely shocked. I expect this kind of hate with the more monied influencers, not that I agree with it, I don’t. But it is not surprising. But this surprised me. Though maybe I shouldn’t be, the mindset today of glorified self righteousness and rampant pious outrage is on another level. SO what did Ashley do to garner so much hate? Well, she is apparently a hypocrite and a bad influence on young people. Or so her haters claim.
…I am sure many of the people calling her out have a closet filled with fast fashion…
Much of the anger revolves around the fact that after years of speaking about sustainable fashion and affordable budgets she did a 180 so to speak, and did campaigns with non sustainable brands such as Amazon, and started to wear high end designer clothing. OK, I get it, there is a bit of hypocrisy there. But the reality is almost NO ONE wears %100 sustainable clothing or leads a %100 sustainable lifestyle. I am sure many of the people calling her out have a closet filled with fast fashion. Yes, promoting it is a bit different then just owning it, but really no one can throw stones if they don’t walk the walk. In my opinion the hate is misguided and disguised. Much of this kind of hate is just that—hate. It is the desire to make one self feel superior, righteous and thusly morally better than someone else. That is really what this kind of thing is all about.
After getting so much hate on YouTube Ashley focused more on Instagram so I started to follow her there. And much like when I was watching her on YouTube, one day I noticed I was not seeing any of her posts so I decided to go to her profile to see what was up—and the reason I was not seeing any of her posts was because she was not posting. Apparently she posted a lifestyle video of a typical date night for her and it featured her smoking in the subway. Although when I say “featured” that would be a gross over statement—the clip was just few second long, if you blinked you missed it.
When I read that this video offended a lot of people I was surprised, personally I thought it was cute, clever, fun to watch and well done. Then I read why…and was not surprised or least not shocked by the reactions.
OK, yes agreed, showing oneself smoking on their social platform is not the best look. And yes, she does have young fans that watch her so yes, this was certainly not a good idea. It was a bad judgment call for sure. The video would have been just as cute and effective if she was putting on lipstick with a compact instead of smoking.
Of course it was not her intention to offend. It was like I said a bad judgment call. But let’s cut her some slack, she is after all one twenty something year old woman. I mean we all remember the Balenciaga fiascoIf an entire team of seasoned professionals can sign off on a campaign that featured children holding teddy bears in bondage without it crossing their minds that there would be major backlash—I think we can cut Ashely a little slack.
I really hope she returns, I am truly sad she is no longer posting anywhere, I believe she also had a stalker which I am sure did not help. One of her fans said that she would probably have a great career in film or marketing, I could see that. Though I think she should shrug off the hate, and come back, we all know it never stopped the Kardashians. Let that haters hate. So I will wait, and I will cross my fingers, and I wish her all the luck she needs in life. I may also do a video on this story, stay tuned…

Oh wow! I’ve never actually heard of her, as I’m really out of the loop for awhile now when it comes to fashion influencers. Thanks for this post, Allie. Really quite interesting to see her journey. Sadly, when you become big as an influencer, the attention you get is both a blessing and a curse. Having a stalker….yikes! Whatever she is doing now, I hope she’s happier, and in a good state of mental health.
Thanks for letting me know about her. It’s so sad how people hate on social media. I definitely will check her out. I had no idea what I was doing at 21!

Such an interesting topic Allie, I do remember her although I didn’t follow her closely. I feel that sometimes social media can get to be too much, and you start to question why you’re even sharing so much about your life. At least that’s how I started feeling myself and I’m currently on a break and not sure how long I will be off Instagram. People can be mean and so judgmental; it’s no wonder Ashley went completely dark offline. I told myself that I would stop posting once I wasn’t enjoying it much anymore and that’s just what I’m doing. Maybe it’s the same for her. There is no reason to share when it’s not bringing you joy. I did start blogging again though since I miss it!
I am glad you started blogging again. With a blog it is %100 yours. With social media nope, you technically do not own your content.
I can easily see why Ashley of BestDressed would have a lot of Followers, readers and views! She looks super-cute, and the outfits she styles and wears look fabulous!
I hope I’m describing her OOTD’s right:
I am loving the appearances of the
short puffy crisp white crop-top styled with the wide-legged pink gingham trousers,
of the artistic white dotted ruffle trimmed beige bustier with the wide-flat-pleated tan skirt,
and of the coordinated puff-sleeved top and black mini-skirt!
As for the trolls, I knew that is not uncommon for jealousy, bigotry, misogyny, lesbophobia and other prejudices to rear their ugly heads in negative comments, and that it can be a big problem when trolls go beyond spewing hate and libel and try (often succeeding) to have their victims’ social media taken down. That has happened to me before on almost every platform I’ve ever been on (photos and videos of males modelling ladies panties are not to everyone’s taste).
I also knew that the organised spreading of hate and organised hate-troll farms on social media were problems in the past… I used to block tens of thousands of them on Twitter.
Perhaps I should have realised sooner how much of a problem the recent ‘A.I.’ (Artificial Idiocy) enabled viral spreading of hate would become!
Sorry for making such a long comment…
Thank you for drawing attention to this subject!!!!!!
I would d love to see and read more about it. 😀
I know it is truly insane and wow I had no idea about the AI. OMG.
No worries on the long comment it is appreciated! OMG tens of thousands that sounds insane! I hope she returns and I hope to do a more in depth video on this.
Yes this was a really great shopping day =) So many good products and it’s super nice to test laundry products 😀
Great post. This outfits look cute. I don’t know Ashley but she sounds cool.
She is so cute!!

Very interesting article, best regards <3
Hello,
Thank you for such an interesting post! It’s always sad to hear that someone who does interesting work on social media gives in to the haters, she must be devastated by so much hate! I wonder why so much hate, I think these people are envious and ill-formed and mean!!! I hope she turns it around and comes back to those who really admire her work!

I know I don’t totally understand the hate I found it very surprising. Me too!
I haven’t heard of this creator before but it sounds like her content was very personal and relatable. It’s impossible to please everyone, especially online, and I hope she makes a return. Thank you for sharing!
Having a stalker is so disturbing – a guy I turned down in high school started following me everywhere at some point and kept looking at me angrily – yikes! I hope she’s okay and that we’ll hear more from her soon. <3

It is and OMG wow egads that does not sound fun at all. Me as well I hope she returns.
I loved Ashley’s videos and was surprised when she disappeared from YouTube, but I didn’t even know all this was happening. The internet is a very dangerous place mentally for those who expose themselves, as it goes from love to hate quickly. I hope she returns to YouTube, she was very genuine and creative.

I didn’t know her but seems to be really interesting person with gorgeous sense of style.
Wow, so interesting! I’ve never heard of her but her content looks really good after a quick scan through her Instagram. It’s too bad how hateful and angry everyone is – nobody has a life of their own so they just pick on others. Ultimately, who cares what other people do! Hopefully she’s enjoying whatever she’s up to now. A public life is definitely not for the faint of heart.

I haven’t heard of Ashely’s YouTube channel, but it does seem like the hate is unwarranted. I’m all for sustainable fashion and thrifting, but that doesn’t mean I’ll never buy any fast fashion pieces, so I have no problem with her buying from nonsustainable brands. Also, that’s horrible she had a stalker!
I never knew about her. She looks really cute. 🙂

I used to love her videos too and was sad to see her leave YouTube, but I understand because of all of the often unwarranted criticism she would get all the time. I do think she took some time away from posting all together on social media, but at least for the past few years she has been back on IG posting mostly fashion content again. Her username is still best.dressed on there if you wanna check it out! I’ve always loved her style and loved reading your thoughts on her! Thanks for sharing! 🙂

Yes she was posting on IG but her last post was in October of 2022 at least under best.dressed, maybe she made another account? She still has 1.5 million followers. I hope she posts again soon…
I love the outfits on the first image..didn’t know about her, sounds like an interesting lady.
Ein wirklich sehr interessanter Beitrag, eine sehr sympathische Person. LG Romy
I’ve never heard of her but it seems unjustified for her to receive such negativity.
Haters are hateful!
Happy Sunday, Allie!
The scrutiny and backlash faced by influencers like Ashley of BestDressed highlight the challenges of navigating public perception and online hate. Despite her genuine and relatable content, she found herself targeted by critics who labeled her as hypocritical and a negative influence on young people. It’s disheartening to see someone with a passion for fashion and sustainability face such intense criticism. Let’s hope Ashley finds the strength to overcome this adversity and returns to sharing her unique perspective with the world. Read my new blog post too!
I haven’t heard of her but the hate people can get on social media is crazy!

I don’t know this influencer, in fact, your post helped me discover her and I am somewhat surprised and outraged about all this hate. Every person has his habits, likes certain things that maybe not everyone agrees upon but I don’t find any if the things above deserving of hate. I believe people is exagerating and hatibg for such futile motive says a lot about the hater not about the one being hated. Anyone is free to stop following someone if their behaviour is not compliant to your convinctions anymore, spreading hate for such reason show one never ever appreciated that person in the beginning.
I hope she will come back soon, there are many persons that could discover her and appreciate her.
Hello,
Interesting post, I have not heard of her and I do not really follow the latest fashion.
I do think it is sad anyone receives hate messages, people lately seem to think it is ok to be mean. You have a beautiful blog. Have a great day!
Glad you liked it, yes it is sad and ridiculous. And thank you so much for your wonderful compliment. : )
Oh wow what a story! This is my first time finding out about her. Love her style in these photos. I hope she decides to return and ignores all the hate!

I have never heard about her. She is really beautiful women.
I didn’t know her before, thank you for the interesting article. 🙂
Oh wow, that is so sad that so many people were hateful towards her! I am sadly not surprised either because that seems to be the new trend. Whatever happened to agreeing to disagree? Truly, you don’t see that much anymore with any topic these days. I absolutely agree with you that throwing stones, and we have all done something that we’re not proud of or could be seen as hypocritical. Therefore, we shouldn’t personally attack someone else. Yes, it’s more than okay to disagree or think maybe there’s a bad judgement call like you said, but it’s not okay to bully someone because that’s truly what it is. I hope she comes back too! I haven’t heard of her up until reading your post, but she sounds lovely from what you said and it’s just sad to see someone bullied off their very own platform. I’m sure most people would move past it as well, sadly they’ll just move on to bullying someone else. What a vicious cycle social media is today!
Hope you’re having a great week so far, my friend! 🙂
By the way, I absolutely LOVE your beautiful blog design!! Looks fantastic!!
Make Life Marvelous
I know it is terrible. But check out her YT channel lots of fun videos there. I think you will enjoy her channel.

I do miss her content
I haven’t heard of her but the hate seems misguided.
For someone to be hated for smoking or doing a collab with Amazon is certainly too much!
People love to hate.
wow such an awesome outfits on this pictures.
