Finally getting to share some of my street style snaps from NYFW. I didn’t shoot as much street style in New York as I did in Paris as I shot more of the shows themselves and I was working,  but I did manage snap a few pix, I hope to shoot more next season if it is not too cold.

I shot most of these photos outside the shows I attended. You will see a few familiar faces Elle from The Elle Diaries and Catt Sadler of E News!. I find I really enjoy shooting street style and shooting in general. And I am looking to start a separate photography website and even have a named picked out which I will share with you some time in the future.  Though I can fill you in a bit, the name is the French version of “I flaunt”. I like the would flaunt or flaunting, but it is already in use as there is a Flaunt magazine. So I went with the French version. Anyway, I hope you enjoy my snaps and there is still plenty more to come from Paris Fashion Week so stay tuned.

What I wore to nyfw ss2018

Things have slowed down a bit, Fashion Week is over and I have a lot more time on my hands now as I was laid off. The upside is I have more time to work on the blog, my newly launched You Tube channel along with learning more about video editing and photography. And I am finally getting to share with you one of the looks I wore for NYFW.

This whole look is fairly low budget. The bomber jacket and ankle boots are from Zara, the tulle jumper is from Forever 21, and the jeans are from H&M. The bag I got on sale at a store called Foxes and is from BCBG. The most expensive thing was the haircut—almost $200. I did not get what I asked for and in no way is this a $200 haircut. I will never spend that much on a cut again. The highlights are nice though. Only paid $100 for them at a walk in salon in Bayridge Brooklyn called Hair Culture. Oh well live and learn.

I am back from Paris and wiped out. Fashion Week kicked my ass. Between the shows here in New York and all the street shooting I did in Paris I think I must have shot about three to four thousand photos. Add in jet leg, a lack of sleep and walking six hours a day—well you can just imagine. In fact I was so tired I missed my flight back—I thought I was on the 1:30 PM flight when in fact I was booked for the 11:00 am flight.

I had a great time shooting, and even though by the end I was exhausted and lost weight I can’t wait for next year

Yeah, that was great. I had to book a hotel near the air port for the night. I used this time to decompress and just laid in bed all day and night and watched movies. But it was a three hundred dollar mistake. I won’t be doing that again.

Here is the first show I shot for street style. I shot this on Avenue De New York, so appropriate. This was outside the Journe SS2018 show. I hope you enjoy my snaps. I had a great time shooting, and even though by the end I was exhausted and had lost weight I can’t wait for next year. I love shooting! And who knows, maybe one day I will think about putting them up on photo stock site. A few extra bucks couldn’t hurt.

THE PHOTOG FILES: HELENE OF FASHION OVER REASON

I am happy to announce a new recurring post series called The Photog Files. In this ongoing series I will be showcasing my photography and some of the techniques I use when shooting and retouching. On this day I was shooting Helene of Fashion Over Reason. We shot in Williamsburg for this shoot, and it was a bit later in the day. I was shooting with my 50MM f1.4 lens at 400 ISO and I stopped up to f1.8 and was shooting in aperture priority due to the changing light as the sun was going down fast. I also used back button focus.

With back button focus you set the camera to have a button on the back of the camera be the tool that you use to focus. By doing this you separate it from the shutter release. I personally find this easier to use, and it allows you to keep your finger on the button and keep the subject in focus if they are moving closer to or farther away from the camera. This can come in very handy.

Of course the images did not look like this right out out the camera, and I have been doing a lot of research online in regards to professional photo retouching and it has been quite useful. I will be doing a post on that next week. But here I used a technique in which you create two curves adjustment layers. On one of the layers you pull the curves tool up to brighten the overall image, and then on the second layer you pull it down a bit to add in more shadows to give the image more depth. I also used a wonderful skin retouching technique I found online which I will be sharing with you next week as well. And finally I played around with a subtle light leak effects action, which I then fine tuned to my liking.

I still have much to learn when it comes to photography, but at least I am enjoying the process. And for the deets on what Helene is wearing: she is wearing Levi’s jeans, Everlane sweater,Loeffler Randall boots, Brixton hat and Ray-Bans.

Link Love Express #8

This weekend I met up with fellow blogger Helene of Fashion Over Reason for a session of street style shooting. We had a lovely time in Williamsburg shooting and well shooting the proverbial you know what. We discussed photography, fashion and the changing blogging landscape. And so in this installment of Link Love Express I will be sharing photography based links and a link on how bloggers can be more supportive of one another as well as a link to reviews on Yelp in regards to a hosting company you should all stay away from. So let’s get started…

1) About that hosting company—In Motion, I called to set up service with them and two weeks later before my site had been transferred I cancelled. Their website states it takes 7-14 days for the transfer to complete. The sales person told me that I had plenty of time if I needed my site to be up on their servers up by November 8th—the date my current host would expire. I went out of my way to ask him…well buy the twelfth day as nothing had moved and my order was still sitting in a que. I called. This was after 19 emails back and forth with tech support regarding changing DNS servers and domain registration—each time getting a different answer. Then when I called tech support about when the transfer would be completed I was told it could take up to 18-20 days. Umm not what I was told when I signed up. Not what their website states in writing.

The tech support representative then offered to sell me expedited service for $29.99 which would be another 4-7 days with no garuntee that it would be done by the 8th. Ummm what?? I signed up October 22nd, the 8th would be the 17th day so why do I have to pay $29.99?? How is that expedited? And why didn’t the sales person mention this when I signed up on the 22nd? It would have been done in a week. I screamed and yelled-and remember I am a NEW customer, and can still cancel. He then offered to waive the fee, but only after I got mad. I agreed to the expedited service with the fee waived.

But now I would to pay for a full year with my current host and then call them a week later for a refund. Hmmm. I went back online and did more research and found reviews for In Motion on Yelp. WOW the reviews were horrendous. People having their sites hacked, having their sites shut down by In Motion claiming they were using too much band width. Data being lost forever due to the In Motion servers being hacked, and on and on, 104 reviews with ninety percent being one star reviews. I called back and cancelled. You can read the reviews here. But if you are looking for a new host stay away from In Motion. I seriously dodged a bullet.

2) This weekend when I was shooting with Helene it was the first time I used back button focus and I LOVE it. I found much easier then front button focus—or when the shutter button is also the focus button. Some people think it take some getting use to, but I found it much easier.  You just have to remember to keep the focus point on the subject you want in focus as it won’t always be lit up. But this  feature will totally come in handy when shooting Fashion Week. You can learn about back button focusing here and here.

3) I discovered another Fashion/street style photographer Tommy Ton. Known also for back stage photography and his eye for detail, it should be no surprise he is highly successful at what he does. So be sure to have a look a around at  TommyTon.com

4) And I also discovered that there is a new reality competition series on Andorama TV for competing photographers. Think ANTM behind the lens. And it is even hosted by Nigel Barker. Cool right? Plus the Andorama site has a ton of useful information for photographers as well as classes and tutorials.

5) And finally I am ending on the same note I stared on. And bringing attention to the changing landscape of blogging, and it seems I am not the only one who has noticed how commenting has dropped off. And that no one is taking the time to really read or look at blogs any more. And the worst part is? It is bloggers themselves that are fueling this shift. But at any rate you can read Ashley’s take on how to be more supportive at her blog HappyPrettySweet.com

To me backstage is just as exciting as front of stage. I love being backstage, it is just so exciting to see the magic happen. The hair, the makeup, the models, the clothes—the transformation. And no, I did not take these photos, I aim one day to be this good. I was front of stage, VERY front of stage as in outside, on the street, being a paparazzi. You can see my snaps from that day here. But aren’t these photos wonderful? They really capture the feel of being backstage, except they make the experience almost seem religious; all serenity and calm. And we all know it is anything but serene. But that is the beauty of photography. How it can capture and transform a moment into something else. Not something better, something different, something transcendent, something that can be savored.

ALLIE NYC & Street Style at NYFW

One of the best parts about fashion week is the street style. I love seeing the looks so many of my fellow fashionista’s put together

One of the best parts about fashion week is the street style. I love seeing the looks so many of my fellow fashionista’s put together. And one of my favorite past times is looking at street style online. So today I am proud to say, I will be sharing some snaps of street style that I myself shot.

I had time to kill between shows for Nolcha, and after strolling outside for a bit and using the rest room, I spied a spot on a bench inside Art Beam and decided to give my tootsies a much needed break from the heels I was sporting. Luckily for me I sat next to quite the fashionable young woman. And the first thing I noticed, was her Fendi bag. It was yellow and had a floral embellished strap.

It was just like the gorgeous Fendi bag I had seen in a magazine except that the one I liked was bigger and burgundy, and had a studded strap and a ruffle detail. I knew her bag was a Fendi, but I inquired on it anyway; of course she confirmed that yes indeed, it was a Fendi. This broke the ice, and the next thing I knew I found myself asking her if she wouldn’t mind posing for photos, and needless to say she was all for it.

She really was the picture of fashion itself

Wearing the perfect ensemble of a sateen floral dress, metallic kitten pumps and according to WhoWhatWear, kitten pumps are having a moment. And her stand out Fendi bag. She really was the picture of fashion itself. And you may have noticed her in the post on Cashmere Song, who she was there to see, as she congratulated the designer Song Hong with a bouquet of flowers.

And yes, she did give me her contact info, and yes I did indeed put said info in to my phone, but thanks to the Google app importing every contact in to my new phone—which I know sounds like a good thing. But not when every contact is every person I have ever emailed. Well you can just imagine. Now I can not find her info. I should of put her information in notes, and then put it in contacts later when I got home. I am sure her info is there somewhere, but finding it? That is another story…

Blogging, Photography and Bonding…

Fashion - alimackin@gmail.com - June 15, 2016

Today I went shooting and for the first time I was behind the lens shooting a living breathing person.

Today I went shooting and for the first time I was behind the lens shooting a living breathing person. I have stated on the blog before that one of my goals was to learn more about photography and to start shooting people. I met up with Andrea of PrettyProperQuaint and we headed to Soho to shoot each other. Andrea is also an aspiring photographer and it was wonderful working with her. I struggled a bit with her camera she has the Canon 5Ti while I have the 3Ti, and I was surprised at how different it was from the one I use. Finally we swapped her 50 mm lens on to my camera so I could shoot more comfortably. This was the first time I shot with a 50 mm or fixed lens and wow what a difference. Seriously if you are remotely interested in photography or taking your blog to the next level then you should definitely invest in a prime or fixed focal length lens. You can read more about shooting with a fixed focal length lens in this post.

Blogging may or may not make you rich, but it can and will enrich your life

I met Andrea through the NYC Style collective and I had such a good time shooting her. This is what I love most about blogging—all the wonderful people you get to meet—people whose paths would never cross if were not for the fact that they actively participate in the world of blogging. It is great to meet other women who not only share my love of fashion, but also my love of photography and creating beautiful imagery. Yes I am a graphic designer, and yes I do something creative for a living, but Andrea works in finance, yet she still has a natural wonderful eye for light and composition and knows how to use her camera. So for those of you that may feel you don’t have what it takes, don’t be afraid to try. Go on and get that DSLR, and spring for the 50 mm lens, then network with other bloggers in your area. Blogging may or may not make you rich, but it can and will enrich your life. So girls let’s do this! And stay tuned for a glimpse at my first shoot as photographer, and as they say this is just the beginning…

In Honor of NYFW and Photographer Sandra Semburg

Fashion - alimackin@gmail.com - September 14, 2015

One of my favorite things to do is surf the net for brilliant street style photography—be it in the moment photography, or an arranged street shoot, there is just something about seeing men and women on the street in their “everyday” clothes and the sense of presence and spontaneity found in this type of photography. And today I discovered another wonderful photographer who is an editorial photographer that also likes to shoot street style looks.

I just love this impromtude engaging image—the colors, the angle of the camera, the expression on the young woman’s face, and of course the clothes. Gorgeous, right? And this is so inspiring me to finally enroll in that photography class I have been thinking about. Plus street style photography is a great resource for fashion inspiration and ideas. The Sheer Trend, Fashion Forward? Sexy? Or just downright Impractical?

Fashion - alimackin@gmail.com - January 12, 2015

[dropcap custom_class="normal"]W[/dropcap] e all know the sheer trend has been with us for some time now, but are we all on board with the sheer trend? And really how practical is it? I mean, one can not really wear a sheer shirt to the office or in the board room. We all know the sheer trend has been with us for some time now, but are we all on board with the sheer trend? And really how practical is it? I mean, one can not really wear a sheer shirt to the office or in the board room. The only way one can pull off a sheer shirt is by wearing something underneath it. But doesn’t it become a bit tiresome to always have to have a second top or camisole on hand to layer with a sheer shirt? And what about sheer skirts? I love how the sheer skirt is styled in this look, but we must admit, this is a very daring look and probably could not be worn in most situations. I can not begin tell you, how many lovely blouses and tops I have tried on, but ultimately did not end up purchasing because they were too sheer to wear. And, in so many cases, the tops had V necks or relatively deep necklines which would look rather ridiculous with a camisole under it. So, I am not really sure how I feel about this trend. On the one hand yes, it can be striking and fashion forward. But the majority of the time, to me, it just ends up not doable, and rather impractical. I hope retailers and designers wake up to this and make more opaque sheer looks. So you can rock the effect, without risking being arrested for indecent exposure.

This image is from the French street style photographer Nabile Quenum who runs the JPMV website. You must stop by his site and have a look around. You will find some of the most striking street style photography currently being published. And for me, Nabile Quenum is up there with another of my favorite street style photographers Adam Katz Sinding.
