Balenciaga Pre-Fall 2017 for lookbook friday

Fashion - alimackin@gmail.com - July 28, 2017

Wow this has been a hot summer, or more to the point—humid. Not particularly enjoyable. I am looking forward to fall with it’s cooler temperatures and sense of new beginnings. And for pre-fall Balenciaga has mixed it up with a slightly left of center collection striking out in a bold yet alluring direction

Wow this has been a hot summer, or more to the point—humid. Not particularly enjoyable. I am looking forward to fall with it’s cooler temperatures and sense of new beginnings. And for pre-fall Balenciaga has mixed it up with a slightly left of center collection striking out in a bold yet alluring direction. With an eighties zeitgeist, and seventies romance, this lineup is a frenetic offering of opposing or dueling sentimentalities.

In contrast you also find traditional florals in untraditional arrangements—like the crop tops with spandex leggings and what can only be described as bonnets—yes you heard that right.

From the classically cut plaid patterned trenches to the demure knee skimming dresses in solid shades of topaz and indigo to flowing pant suits you will find a calming element in an otherwise off kilter kaleidoscope of unsettling yet captivating ensembles.

Saturated satins in jewel tones are draped in all manner of garments, from sheath maxis to wrap dresses and peasant tops. They are juxtaposed against highly structured jackets in dark tweeds and deconstructed puffers. In contrast you also find traditional florals in untraditional arrangements—like the crop tops with spandex leggings and what can only be described as bonnets—yes you heard that right.

Add a killer pair of over the knee boots in an array of colors and textures from vinal to lace to an embroidered pattern of etched florals, and out of the box pieces that demand a second look and you have a lineup that is not for the faint of heart. But a not to be forgotten statement in an arena that is ever more challenging in holding one’s attention.

Happy Friday everyone, can you believe we are half way through the summer? Kind of sad but it also means we heading towards a new season which means new clothes to buy, attending Fashion Week and getting ready for the holidays. Not all bad right? I am excited to buy fall clothes so I was quite happy to discover the fun new label Avec Les Filles. Avec Les Filles was founded in February 2017 and currently they are selling through Macy’s and are a “shop within a shop”.

With the free-spirited millennial in mind the collections of Avec Les Filles seeks to bring together the traditional Parisian school girl of the 1970’s with a contemporary so-cal vibe suggesting an ease of life style with an urban flair. From romantic pussy bow blouses and ruffle tops to streamlined strapless frocks and Chanel inspired separates to what can only be described as an “overalls dress this line up is fresh, youthful, and has just the right amount of demure femininity. The perfect balance of minimalism and artful details Avec Les Filles is going to be a go staple for seasons to come.

Link Love Express #7 The NYFW Edition

Fashion - alimackin@gmail.com - September 5, 2016

Yes that time of year is quickly approaching, no not back to school, but NYFW or for some Fashion Month. And did I mention I will be in Paris for Paris Fashion week?

Yes that time of year is quickly approaching, no not back to school, but NYFW or for some Fashion Month. And did I mention I will be in Paris for Paris Fashion week? Well no, it is not like a brand is paying me 20k and flying me to Paris. A  complaint and misery experienced by an unnamed big time blogger and an anecdote shared by Rebeca Minkoff at her Back to School event last week. I mean, really? Really? Wow, said blogger should stop trying so hard. But yes I am going to Paris and yes it will the week of Paris Fashion Week. I hope to get to a show or two.  But here on this side of the pond NYFW is due to start next week so I rounded up a number of useful and entertaining links to celebrate this most fashionable of months. So without further adieu…

1) Style Tomes Guide To Getting Noticed at NYFW. Yes Nataliya breaks it all down and shares her tips. And being a former model, and a current occasional street fashion photographer she knows a thing or two on this subject.

2) Fashion Mews expands on this theme in her Five Tips to Own Your Street Style Pose. Plus you get to see some cool photography from Nataliya.

3) And as we all know many of the big shows are closed and only open to the buyers, editors, celebs and the most rarified of bloggers. But FashionWeekOnline has a calendar that you can filter to show you fashion shows and events that are open to the public. Cool right? And you can click on the event on the calendar to sign up, buy tickets or get more information. So if you are in NY, or are coming to NY for Fashion Week and can not get in to the big shows, or even the mid level shows this is a great resource.

4) And for fun and inspiration be sure to check out Vogue’s Street Style page on their website. So many great photos to peruse through. These photos just make me so happy I am a woman and fashion is a thing, right?

5) And finally for those that can not get to New York or Paris but you still want to be in the know of what is happening during Fashion Week here is Pop Sugar’s list of must follow IG fashion influencers. I am definitely going to be following a few of these fashion insider my self.

Mulberry Fall 2015 for Lookbook Friday

Fashion - alimackin@gmail.com - September 4, 2015

A number of seasons ago the embellished motif trend was a fixture on all the runways—with decadent embroidered facades and layers of sumptuous textiles alluding to an indulgent world of leisure and affluence. This was followed by a more austere minimalist approach seen throughout the fashion world and which now seems to be giving way to a trend that is allowing for a bit more detail and flourish.

Mulberry’s Winter/Fall collection for 2015 is embracing this trend with an overtly opulent intent. Creative director Emma Hill left the brand a little over a year ago with new creative director Johnny Coca taking over in July. The brand may have been with out a creative head for a number of months but that did not stop the house design team from creating a swoon worthy collection. Citing Georgian interiors with their elegance, openness and Rococo and neoclassical architectural influences, the Fall 2015 lineup epitomizes this artisan approach to life. From an intarsia double faced sheepskin checkered print coat with contrasting calf hair, to a cream colored boucle coat with a luxurious embroidered artisan patterned motif, to a pink and black wool mini dress with an over-sized architectural print, to an intricately printed jumpsuit in the same artisan motif seen in a number of other pieces, to woven jacquard dresses and luxurious tweed like jumpsuits, to a gray leather two piece cape top and skirt the pieces in this lineup are a memorable statement of classic elegance. The palette is a subdued combination of pale pinks and grays to soft ivory, rich black, deep navy, with the occasional appearance of burgundy, rust and coral. Together the over-all effective is sophisticated, demure, and understatedly arresting.

[dropcap custom_class=”normal”]A[/dropcap]  couple of weeks ago we looked at Alberta Ferretti’s Resort 2015 collection. Well today we are taking a step back to look at the Pre-Fall 2014 collection. After all it is fall and we are all shopping for fall clothes at the moment. Right? The Pre-Fall collection embraces a number of trends while also managing to surprise us with some unexpected moments. Knits, which are big for fall, show up in the expected neutrals but they also make an appearance in a bright canary yellow, not a color generally associated with fall. However they are paired with a slightly more subdued jade print and black and white paint splash print to give it a less spring like feel. But the cut of the skirts reminds us that wearing clothes should be fun, and a flouncy mini is certainly fun. The skirts are balanced by garments with a less structured fit. The non body-con silhouette is still big for fall as well, and this is expressed in a semi-fitted, vaguely boxy suit in a beautiful burgundy print, an asymmetrical A-line slip dress in basic black, and a sleeveless, beautifully draped hoodie dress. There are also empire waisted sleeveless gowns, an edgy satin dress in an over-sized box cut with layered cap sleeves and a super chic lace and satin like top.

[dropcap custom_class=”normal”][/dropcap] You will also find a below the knee pleated dress, a stand-out fitted black and white print cocktail dress, as well as a more romantic cocktail dress in black lace. And another stand out is the burgundy, paint-splatter print matching skirt and jacket set. Pair it with some patent booties like these and no one can accuse you of being derelict in your fashionista duties. So my fellow fashionista’s I hope you all have a wonderful weekend and I hope you enjoyed this week’s Look Book Friday.

[dropcap custom_class=”normal”]F[/dropcap] all is has definitely arrived in New York, and there is even a taste of winter in the air. This week I spoke about how the color black is the color of choice for NYC fashionista’s. So it should be no surprise that winter in NY is all about neutral colors with black as a base. And it should also be no surprise that London fashion is often similar to New York fashion. I often like to think of these two cities as sister cities. If you like NY, you will probably like London. And if you like the downtown NY aesthetic then you will love the Fall/Winter collection from the British company Sandro. This edgy new collection has a downtown girl appeal with lots of black, neutral tones and a young urban aesthetic. From flouncy mini’s to pencil cut leather skirts, to oversized letterman inspired jackets, white collared pea coats, childishly illustrated graphic prints, school-uniform strap dresses, and unexpected pin stripped blazers and trousers this collection is not for the uptown girl. So, are you more of an uptown girl? Or is downtown more your domain?
