A White Button Down Shirt — a Reinvented Must Have Staple with Limitless Options

I t use to be that a white button down shirt was associated with stuffy, straight laced office attire and unimaginative drones who thought fashion was a four letter word. Well those days are gone in a big way, and the white button down has been reinvented into a fashion staple must have. There are many ways to style a white button down shirt—really the sky is the limit, and that is what makes the white button down such a sought after staple. It can be worn with jeans, with trousers, with skirts or shorts. You can dress it down for lunch with friends, or you could dress it up for a night on the town, or you could style it for day at the office. Jeans is definitely one of the more poplar items to pair with a white button down. I love this look with the ripped jeans and white blazer and white sling backs—the high low mixing of casual and more formal pieces gives this look from the blogger of Damsel in Dior a fresh urban feel. Or what about black jeans and black booties for the same yet opposite look?

And for a really fashion forward look you could pair it with a white fringe skirt. OK wow, so unexpected but so spot on! Love this. Another thing you can do with a long white button down top is to layer it under a crop top. This is one of my favorite ways to wear a crop top, because I must admit I don’t really do the bare midriff look, just not my thing. Arielle of Something Navy, did a wonderful job pairing her high-low crop top and navy skirt with this white button down. With summer right around the corner pairing a crisp white button down with shorts is kind of a no brainer, we often see it paired with denim cut offs, but what about a printed cotton pair of shorts? Trish over at Fashion According to the Menu did exactly that and boy does she look great. And what could be better then a pair of great jeans, a simple white shirt and boho hat. Such a simple, easy breezy look that is not only effortless, but super on trend. Krystal from This Time Tomorrow who works as a merchandiser in the shopping and commerce department at Google really pulled it together for this look. I can see why she is a merchandiser.
So, do you own any white button downs? I just purchased my first one—a short sleeved number from Zara and I can’t wait to wear it. How do you wear your

white button down? And do you have more then one? Right now I am the proud owner of one white button down shirt, but I just got started and I think I just may have an addiction!

  1. Hi Allie, I love them so much!! They are a basic in my wardrobe, short sleeve, long sleeve, etc… I have an addiction as well., in fact I am going to the white shirt Gianfranco Ferre exhibition soon!!
    I adore Damsel in dior!.
    Have a great week.

  2. Isn’t it amazing how fast attitudes can change. I used to think of shirts as super daggy and something you wear when you’re middle aged or older. Ha! Look at me now (though I must point out I am nowhere near middle aged), I can’t get enough of their chicness!

  4. Nothing like a crisp white button down. I have a few and some in other colors and just love them. I wear them all the time. They do become addicting!! Lol.

  5. Yes!
I love a good white button down and would normally wear them with jeans, like your first picture. Then it doesn’t feel too formal or stiff. Or just chuck an oversized one over my swimwear in the summer as a great cover up. Love the images on this post!

  6. A white button down is such a classic must have. I like the way they look on other people but I don’t own one since I don’t wear white and don’t like to iron.

  7. They are all working these looks! I got some great inspo in this post! Thanks girl 🙂

  8. Amen to the first sentence, I too associate white shirt with boring office attire hence I never own any. I started reading and following fashion blogs roughly mid of last year so I’m slowly adding bits and pieces that I had no clue on how to wear in the past. It’s a very slow learning curve for me but I’m trying. LOL!
