The weather has been unsettled this summer with lots of rain and of course the usual humidity. This weekend was not too bad though and my friend Laurie and I headed to the quaint sea side town of North Port. After working all week in the city it is nice to get away. We strolled the picturesque streets, and shopped in the charming boutiques—I picked up trinkets for step-family in Paris, and afterwards we had lunch at an oyster bar. And when we spied this lovely miniature park we knew we had to shoot here. Enchanting isn’t it?

I picked up this fun striped ruffled sleeve tee at Banana Republic. It was on sale and I paid a whopping $16.99 for this super comfortable tee. The ruffle detail is a simple way to add interest to a basic tee—so cute. I paired it with these girlfriend cut jeans from Gap and the mules are from Zara. You will not believe how much I paid for them. Are you sitting down? Would you believe me when I say $10.00? Yep that is what I paid.  And they were originally $59.99 and they are still on sale for $10.00 so hurry! And the bag you have seen before in my City Point post, from city to sea side this bag is serving me well.

How do you spend your summer weekends?

A Dramatic Off The Shoulder Top From Shein and A DAY OUT IN SOHO

Summer in NY, yes it can be hot, and many times I would rather be at the shore, but the city can also be a magical place in the summer too. People spilling out of sidewalk cafes, the long days and golden sun sets—plus it tends to be a bit less crowded and the perfect time to shoot. This past weekend I met up with a photographer named Marina who I met through Instagram. I had been following her feed and discovered she lived three towns over from me. How cool is that? Definitely one of the upsides of social media. After following Marina for about a year on Instagram we met last winter during NYFW, we were attending the same show and she recognized me from my feed. But this weekend was the first time we met up to shoot.

We headed to Soho were I got my hair braided at Birch Box by the very talented Karina Sanchez. I love their hair and makeup services — you can get an updo or braids done for only $30, how cool is that! With these super dramatic over-sized ruffles I knew having my hair up was a no brainer. And speaking of the top, this top was gifted to me from Shein and I must say I think I knocked it of the park with my choice of this show stopping stunner. I had numerous people stop me in the street to ask me where I got it.

And with the fashion forward braids, Kardashian worthy top, my fringe heels, and Marina following me about with a telephoto lens I kind of felt like Kim Kardashian

And with the fashion forward braids, Kardashian worthy top, my fringe heels, and Marina following me about with a telephoto lens I kind of felt like Kim Kardashian. I paired this top with these high rise flares from H&M but it would look really good with a skirt too, and I just may do this for fashion week. The bag is from BCBG and the sandals are from Zara which I picked up last summer.  The necklace I picked up at Oh La La a few months ago. Remember the video? This gorgeous top retails for $17.85 if you can believe that. So if you want to stop traffic like I did be sure to head to Shein.com. And tell them Allie sent you!

A Paisie Winter Teddy Bear Coat and a creepy postal worker

Fashion - alimackin@gmail.com - February 6, 2017

Yes winter has finally arrived here in New York. And as we head towards NYFW I suspect it may get even colder. It seems no matter how mild a winter may be when NYFW arrives

Yes winter has finally arrived here in New York. And as we head towards NYFW I suspect it may get even colder. It seems no matter how mild a winter may be when NYFW arrives it brings the polar vortex along with it. This weekend it was in the mid twenties for a high. So it was a cold one and being out and about was a bit of a challenge. In fact the start to my entire day on Saturday was a bit of a challenge.

The first fly in the ointment was when I realized I had left my phone at home. Great. How was I going to contact my friend Angela who I was meeting up with? Luckily I was going to get my hair done at the salon where my friend also has her hair done so I was able to ask the owner if she had Angela’s number on file and she did, so I was able to call Angela and give her the low down. Whew. Then after I realized that I had left my phone at home I discovered that I left my ear muffs on the train. Ugh. And then when we finally went to shoot, I realized I had brought the wrong lens.

My friend Angela was aghast. I decided right then and there I needed a drink

Ok so far the morning had gone just GREAT! Grrrr. Between an intense full-time job in publishing, maintaing a blog full-time and the current geo-political situation, I am more then a little stressed. And to top it off, towards the end of our shoot a postal worker who had been sitting in his truck, came up to us and asked if we wanted to continue the shoot in his truck. Umm, what? My friend Angela was aghast. I decided right then and there I needed a drink. And we  quickly packed up and headed to lunch, and I did indeed order a much needed glass of wine.

Now on to the clothes. Is this a great teddy bear coat or what? I purchased it online from a company called Paisie. I had seen a young woman wearing it as I was waiting in line at Starbucks. I asked her where she got it and she told me about this British company called Paisie. As soon as I got back to my desk I headed to said website, found the coat, which luckily for me they had in my size and promptly bought it. Plus it was on sale! This was a good day.

The top which I think is intended to be worn as a dress is from Vivienne Tam. And the patch work jeans are from Gap. And as many of know the boots are from Zara which I wrote about in this post. I love these booties, super fun to wear and uber comfortable. The sunnies are from Michael Kors and the bag was a Christmas gift from my sister and is from Onna Ehrlich’s winter collection. But it is the teddy bear coat that really pulls this look together. Do you have a teddy bear coat? Do you like them? And if you do, how do you style yours?

bye bye black and my shopping and fashion resolutions for 2017

Fashion - alimackin@gmail.com - January 31, 2017

Some people make generalized resolutions at the new year, I make shopping resolutions at the new year. And this year I made three resolution

Some people make generalized resolutions at the new year, I make shopping resolutions at the new year. And this year I made three resolutions. The first is: no more black. I have a ton of black clothes, perhaps it is because I live in New York but it is a go to habit that I want to break. So I am on a mission to not buy any black for the next year; no black clothes, coats or shoes. Think I can pull it off? Not sure if I will go an entire year without buying one black item, but wish me luck.

And the second resolution is: no heels over two inches high. Last week I wrote about a pair of boots I picked up at Zara with a 1.5 inch heel. I wore them to work yesterday and walked all over the city with comfort and ease. It is nice to be able to wear a heel and still be able to walk for an extended period of time. With higher heels I have wear sneakers to work and then carry the heels in bag and put them on at the office. And I find this is the only time I wear higher heels—when I am at the office. This is so limiting and I would like to have more shoes I can wear out and about with friends and that I can commute to work in, without having to do a swap at the office.

And my final resolution is to acquire more jewelry. I don’t have very many pieces and so I wear the same pieces over and over.  And with these two jewelry designers I featured on the blog, I will be off to a good start. Then I will have to get in the habit of actually wearing it. I have a bad habit of running out the door in the morning sans jewelry, and I hope to break this habit as well.  This will take a little work, but knowing what the problem is half the battle right?

Do you have any shopping/fashion resolutions for 2017?

Glitter Ankle Boots from Zara and my first pair of statement boots

Accessories - alimackin@gmail.com - January 18, 2017

Here they are—my first pair of statement boots. From Zara of course. Nothing sensible about these babies

Here they are—my first pair of statement boots. From Zara of course. Nothing sensible about these babies. Silvery, glittery and oh so sparkly these are not go to office wear to be sure, unless of course you work in fashion then anything goes. I am super excited to wear these glitter bombs, and I love the lower heel—being a NewYorker I do a lot of walking and I am sticking to my commitment to buying lower heeled boots. I drew a line in the sand this past fall and decided I was only going to buy boots with heels that are two inches or lower. And I think I am off to a good start, yes? And the best part I got these on sale for $35.00. They had retailed for $59.99 so that is almost half off. They are no longer available online, though there may be a few left in local stores.

And if you want to get on board with the metallic glitter trend click through the selections below, and because you know what?  It’s good to be a girl!

The Statement Boot—The Hottest Trend of the Moment What Does it Mean to you

Fashion - alimackin@gmail.com - November 21, 2016

Last week I purchased a pair of mid calf black boots. I have been wanting a pair of mid-calf boots for a while now

Last week I purchased a pair of mid calf black boots. I have been wanting a pair of mid-calf boots for a while now so I was super happy to have acquired these babies. And many of you may have experienced this yourselves, but it seems as soon as you acquire a much sought after item you find you desire something else. Am I right? And that is exactly what happened to me. And I now have my eye on a statement boot. You know, a boot that is not black or even an all over neutral color, but a boot that is out of the box and makes a statement.

Last week in my Bloggers On Duty profile Helene was wearing a super cool pair of statement boots in a snake skin print. Definite show stoppers to be sure, they got me thinking and lusting for a pair of statement boots of my own. But where to begin? There are so many choices. From animal prints, to embroidered patterns, to boots with clear vinyl heels to glitter and metallic finishes to two toned numbers like this pair from Zara, it seems the sky’s the limit when it comes to stepping away from the proverbial go to black boot.

Do you have a pair of statement boots? And if you do what kind do you have? And if not would you purchase a pair of statement boots? And what kind would you buy? I will keep you posted in my quest on acquiring a pair of statement boots, not sure what I have in mind yet but with all the choices to be had I am sure I will find exactly what I want.

Zara Block Heeled Sandals So Retro Chic and Gorgeous!

Fashion - alimackin@gmail.com - April 4, 2016

I have been on a mission as of late to acquire more flat and low heeled shoes. Being a New Yorker I spend almost no time in  a car and most of the time I get from point A to point B via my own two feet and public transportation. So having shoes I can I walk in is a no brainer. But I do like to look dressed up sometimes so a mid block heeled sandal is the perfect solution. Just a little extra height, a comfortable blocky heel two inches or under can make you look just the right amount of dressed up and you will still be able to walk in them all day. And these sandals from Zara are just the ticket. I could totally see these with a pair of frayed edge denim calypso pants. Yes? Now my only question is, should I also get them camel?

As I said in last weeks post these shoes are super comfortable and easy to walk around in for a relatively long time. I wore them to NYFW to a number of shows, and here I wore them to go out to dinner with a couple of fellow bloggers

I wore them to NYFW to a number of shows, and here I wore them to go out to dinner with a couple of fellow bloggers; Alex of Letters From The City and Renta of Purse Fixation. You can dress them up and were them with a skirt or dress or some trousers, or you could pair them with jeans and a tee. Here I wore them with a top I picked up on sale at COS, H&M’s higher end sister store and the yellow bag I picked up at Steve Madden last summer. A perfect look for a casual evening out in Soho, don’t you think? Next time I may try them with a tee instead, then I’ll throw on a blazer and a cute brimmed hat and viola, I will have another effortless casually chic look. Right?

Zara Suede Booties Just in Time for NYFW

Fashion - alimackin@gmail.com - September 7, 2015

Yes it is finally here, the start of NYFW and I will be attending a number of shows. And to that end of course it was the perfect excuse to wear something new. So last week on my lunch break off I went to do a bit of shopping in Soho where the office I work in is conveniently located. As I picked up a new top the week before and I thought a new pair of shoes could do the trick. I stopped in to ALDO first and tried on a pair of flats—they were a studded two tone number which is a knock off of the famous Valentino shoes.

Yes it is finally here, the start of NYFW and I will be attending a number of shows. And to that end of course it was the perfect excuse to wear something new. So last week on my lunch break, off I went to do a bit of shopping in Soho where the office I work in is conveniently located. As I picked up a new top the week before, I thought a new pair of shoes could do the trick. I stopped in to ALDO first and tried on a pair of flats—they were a studded two-tone number and are a knock off of the famous Valentino shoes. But alas they were too big—way to big. I could fit a finger at the top in the toe section, the back of my heel had a good half inch behind it, and the strap even on the last hole had a quarter of inch around my ankle. The sales person who was trying to sell  me even exclaimed “wow that looks big”. Unfortunately he did not have a five. Though that said I am not a five, and still measure a six and half on a traditional Brannock foot measuring device. I then headed to Zara where I spied these uber chic suede booties, and guess what? They are a 37 which is a six and half in The States. They are a bit snug, certainly not big, but they more or less run true to size. Plus, they are super comfortable and easy to walk in. They retail for $99.00 and if you are lucky enough to live in NY, you will not have to pay tax! So if you are looking for an affordable, fashion forward and yes genuine suede boot for fall definitely head on over to your local Zara. And stay tuned to see me sporting these beauties in posts to come, so gorge how could I not show them off!
