Dinner and a Movie in Greenwich Village in NYC

 T  his past weekend was beautiful here in New York. Blue skies, sunshine, warm weather and no humidity. I met a friend for dinner and a movie and we decided to see Closed Curtain at The Film Forum. The Film Forum is in a fun and picturesque part of town which surprisingly was not crowded. Summer in NY is hot and many people flock to the beaches and Fire Island, though there were certainly plenty of tourists about, but after all it is summer in New York.

 “Closed Curtain” is an Iranian film about a director that is banned from making movies for twenty years. In addition, owning dogs is outlawed as they are seen as “unclean”, yes I am not making this up. The film is about a director under these circumstances who retreats to a remote beachside home with his dog. He blocks all the windows with black curtains and lives this way for a number of months.

There are some disturbing scenes in the film, mainly older footage seen on a television screen, but they are disturbing non the less, so if you love dogs, be for-warned. The film is very much an art house film, and a bit experimental so it could put some people off. It is very nonlinear and can be hard to follow, but you will get it by the close of the film. I have to admit I found my mind wandering a bit here and there (it is very talky) and my friend was sort of losing it by the end. But the film was actually made by the director himself—the one who is banned. He also appears in the film along with another banned director, both of whom continued to film and had films shown in Berlin and have now had their pass ports revoked and can no longer leave the country. So this does add an extra element of interest. It did receive critical acclaim so it is worth checking out.

After the film we headed to dinner and dined at a bistro called McCoy. We both had macaroni and cheese, and I was really decadent and had the blue cheese and bacon version. Yes it was rich and super delicious. I paired it with a glass of white wine, which was the perfect accompaniment. The cafe is in the  heart of Greenwich Village and has a lovely Parisian flair to it. From the black and white palette, to the traditional subway tiles, and marble top tables this cafe has ambiance. You will feel like you have been transported to Paris in the 1920s.

For this day out in NY, I decided to go with a casual denim on denim look, but didn’t realize the length of my “cut-offs” which are actually more like culottes. Umm ok gals what do you think? Think they could be a wee bit shorter? I am tall, so I am always worried about cutting them too short. I was in a rush and did not check  myself in the mirror before I left. Hmmm. Note to self—get ready sooner so you can check out your look before you leave the house!
