I shot this a view weeks ago at the very end of March, it was not warm. Spring has not quite sprung here in NY. Nothing is really blooming yet though it has is a been bit warmer. On this day it was in the upper thirties-low forties. I had a different outfit in mind but it was just too cold to wear what I had planned. So here I am in head to toe cold weather gear. And I am also in head to toe items I already own. My goal this year is to buy less fast fashion and to do more posts where I highlight clothes I have worn before but in a new look.
Granted much of the clothes in this post are indeed fast fashion. The cropped sweater and star print jeans are from H&M and the over the knee boots are from Zara. I won’t say I will never buy fast fashion again but I am severely limiting my purchases. The upside to todays look is that nothing is brand new.
I would not have a problem with fast fashion at all if the clothes were made sustainably and if all the workers were treated with the same rights given to employees in the west
The newest items are the sweater which I picked up in November and the Splendid bag which I got in December. The jeans I purchased in the summer of 2017 and the boots I bought in the winter of 2016. The sunnies I got last summer and the coat is pre-loved and from my mom. She did not wear it anymore and when I saw it I grabbed it! Actually when she bought the coat it was not new, so technically this is a double pre-loved coat!
In addition to purchasing less fast fashion, I also want to buy more pre-loved items and rent clothes as well. And then save my money for more expensive well made quality pieces. What are your purchasing goals for this year? And how do you feel about fast fashion? I would not have a problem with fast fashion at all if the clothes were made sustainably and if all the workers were treated with the same rights given to employees in the west. I would even be willing to pay more. And I do realize many people and parents especially can not afford designer clothes and these companies are helpful to low income families. Strides have been made in this direction, though the companies still need to go further and to be more transparent. You can read about H&M’s recycling policy here and Zara’s here. What say you?

I know right? This season is strange, I find myself with sweater and lighter fabrics and with my umbrella always reading to protect me from any unexpected rain. The cool thing is that this “in-between-season” is always a good reason to experiment with strange things.
Loved everything in the look but the bag and the sunglasses are definitely my favorite pieces, I think these accessories were definitely a good investment and you could wear them along the season despite the weather or the trends.
And talking about companies like Zara or H&M I totally understand you, I’ve been involved with an organization in Barcelona that organize events and conferences related with Sustainable Fashion and I always think about that it is necessary to slow fast fashion a little bit in order to keep the planet alive.

The problem with chinese workers is that they are so many milions that there are people who wants to work for less money that’s why the salaries are too low in China. That’s a big problem. That’s what is happened here in Portugal with engineers, they are so many that the salaries go down down, because there is always someone who wants to work for less money.

I feel the same way as you do about fast fashion and have been trying to make better and more sustainable choices. At least H&M has the conscious collection in addition to their recycling program. I have made the shift to well made quality pieces as much as possible since I realized that some of the most loved items are older designer pieces. This outfit is total effortless chic and a nice way to highlight a mix of old and new from your wardrobe.

Honestly, I don’t have a problem with fast fashion, but as someone who knits and sews, I do feel that I shouldn’t have to buy them. I do buy a lot of fast fashion stuff for the kiddos just coz they outgrow things so fast, but thank God I get a lot of hand-me-downs for my daughter at least.:) You shopping goal is inspiring.
Same here for me and I have cut down my spending by a heck lot. I rather save and get something really high quality than following trends.

I think it’s a good effort that you are making consciously to minimise your spending, on fast-fashion, in general is such a big issue. I used to work with global manufacturing companies on and not all are bad, there are brands out there that are sustainable, but many are not, the ones with workers being underpaid is only the tip of the iceberg for some of those companies. It’s incredibly sad. It’s a smart decision to buy garments that are better quality in lieu of filling one’s wardrobe with abundance and lower quality.

I love this look. Those jeans are stunning. I’m trying to be more conscious with what I buy. Not just quality but with ethics in mind too. It’s hard to completely turn your back on fast fashion. For me I fluctuate and go between sizes (ie regular and plus) and I find it hard to find clothing that really fits properly. Not many labels cater to this. ASOS does and it’s one of my favourite places to shop. They also have certain lines which have been produced ethically or environmentally friendly etc.

I’m totally with you and would rather spend more for better quality. The last time I bought fast fashion was when I bought H&M organic cotton clothes for my kids.
