Straw hats have been trending for a few seasons now. They are all the rage for summer and do double duty: looking super stylish and on trend while also serving a purpose and keeping the sun off your face. Another thing about them is that they have brims, and the brims shade your eyes which keeps you from squinting. So not only do they keep the skin ravaging rays off your face but they keep you from forming frown lines. A triple win if you ask me.
A few seasons back we predominantly saw fedora style hats which of course are still going strong, but recently thanks in part to Instagram and everyone trying to out do one another for the over the top photo, we now have over the top hats–the bigger the better! These hats may make great photo ops but I would feel a bit inconspicuous walking down the board walk in one of these. Though I must admit they are fun.
The distressed straw hat is really trending right now and this is probably the newest aspect we are witnessing this season. I think this trend is super fun and I love the more textural element to them, it really gives you that beachy bohemian vibe which just screams summer. I picked one up at H&M last week on a whim, and can’t wait to style it with a new bathing suit I recently purchased .
Another trend which is fairly new for the season is the straw hat with ribbons that tie at the neck. I have been seeing this all over You Tube, the internet and the blogosphere. I think this is quite the smart trend. A few weeks ago I was headed to the beach and waiting on the platform for the train when a gust of wind blew the hat I was wearing off my head on to the track, and that was that. I was not happy camper. So, yeah a hat that ties at the neck, I say yes please!
It seems every influencer worth her weight in gold has stepped out in a straw hat for the summer. From Chriselle Lim to Aimee of Song of Style to lesser know bloggers, but it appears the straw hat is here to stay for the foreseeable future. Like I said I found a distressed brim straw hat at H&M. As I have stated on the blog I am not buying a lot of fast fashion but when it comes to things like hats, gloves and sunnies I do generally go with fast fashion as I tend to lose these type of items quite easily.
You can check out H&M but I also found a really fun over-sized straw hat at Lulu‘s and a distress one with a tie ribbon at Free People, the one I have does not have a ribbon tie. Of course the graphic text hat is still going strong. And what about straw visors? How cool are these visors that I found on Etsy? That could be the next big trend! Do you have any straw hats? I picked up a straw hat at Big W of all places years ago and it’s the only hat I wear, haha! It’s a big one, but sometimes you need that extra sun protection – like if we are out for a beach or picnic and there’s no shade around, you really need a hat to block more of the sun.

For me hats are less about style and more about sun protection. I’m kind of over straw hats at the moment and have taken to wearing a mesh hat this summer.I probably will go back to my straw hats at some point.

I have seen the straw hat trend all over Instagram and I love it! It looks like such a great hat for summer and the tie around the neck ones are perfect for windy days. I actually tried one on at Target recently but I didn’t think it suited me. And the straw visor is a cool new look!

I’ve been seeing a bunch of influencers wear those shallow straw hats with huge brims, and I looove how they look, though they’re probably too much of a statement for me to wear personally, and I don’t have any clothes to go with them 😛 I shall just admire from a distance ;P Lately I’ve really been wanting to wear visors because I like the brim, and I also like putting my hair up in a high pony, which a baseball cap doesn’t allow for… thus, visors! I tend to wear the same style of straw hats during ever summer, a fedora or cloche. Those are my favourite. I love the retro and larger styles here as well but they aren’t typically my style.
