The Baugette Bag, a 90’s It Girl Piece We All Need To Own

Fanny packs and dad sneakers, two of the ugliest non-fashion statement making pieces became the go-to items the last couple seasons for any self-respecting fashionista who wanted up her chic factor. If anyone had told me five years ago said items would be walking the runways of the biggest names in fashion I would have said someone had been consuming too much chardonnay. Well, here we are in 2019 and I am guilty of owning at least one pair of dad sneakers. Nothing encapsulates the embodiment of fashion in the nineties then the cultural phenomenon otherwise know as Sex In The City. And if there is one item along with her infamous Jimmy Choos that epitomized Carries look it would be the small impractical handbag tucked neatly beneath her shoulder. No backpacks, no crossbody bags, no over-sized boho’s—just a tiny bag that let the clothes take center stage. This was before smart phones, tablets and laptops. But even then, it was not the most practical of bags, but it is certainly one of the most comfortable. Big enough for only a phone, a credit card holder and a lipstick, this style of bag will leave you free to enjoy your day sans the sore shoulders. This may not be a 9-5 bag but, it is perfect for brunch with the girls or for a day shopping about town. The baguette bag started with Fendi, and according to Vogue when it made it’s debut appearance on SITC in 1997 it went on to sell almost 100,000 in the first year. And of course this spawned an army of copy cats with baguette bags being the bag of the of the late nineties, early 2000’s…

Who What Wear claims this is the bag to buy second hand, and that is exactly what I did. I picked one up at a local thrift store though admittedly not a Fendi. I bought a purple Franco Sarto baguette bag which I am super excited to use this summer. I was inspired to buy it after reading Jess of Not Jess Fashion’s post on the second-hand Fendi baguette bag she recently added to her wardrobe. So if you are thinking of trying this trend but don’t want to make the big investment of a new designer bag, do consider a pre-loved option. And stay tuned for a post on how I am going to style my newly aquired baguette bag.

  31. I am still on the fence with dad sneakers. I remember the baguette bags! I had a Coach one way back before I decided to sell it. Looking back I wish I hadn’t. Fashionphile is a good place to buy pre-loved. They also offer layaway so which is a nice perk.
