Posing for street photos how the “pros” do it

Posing for photos is not as easy as it looks. And anyone who has ever watched America’s Next Top Model knows this. In fact this was one of the reasons that Tyra Banks started the show—she wanted to show difficult in really is to pose for the camera. And with the explosion of fashion and personal style blogs it seems we are discovering that as well, and by we I mean us non professionals, non models and non photographers. The us who just get out there and do it, guerrilla style.

And although we may shoot guerrilla style we don’t want our photos to look amateurish or uninteresting. Getting a great photo is a unique balance between a photographer with an eye for what works, and a subject that knows how to move. And it may seem like photography is the more challenging of the two to learn, but posing is much harder then one would think, and the average person and many models are not always so comfortable with posing, and with being in front of the camera.

This model does an excellent job in her posing and you have the super helpful benefit of watching her in the process of posing and the final result of the captured photo

There are no easy answers or quick tips but practicing helps. And with the wonderful world of the internet and sites like You Tube there is almost nothing you can’t find a tutorial on, and this video is not a tutorial in the traditional sense but it is a great resource for watching someone posing. This model does an excellent job in her posing and you have the super helpful benefit of watching her in the process of posing and the final result of the captured photo. So if you feel awkward in front of the camera and this does not come naturally to you, be sure to check out this video from Jessica Kobeissi , one very talented photographer who shoots with no frills but gets stunning results.

  1. Cool video thanks for sharing.

  2. Posing is definitely an art in itself and the good thing about it is that it can be perfected through practice.

  3. So true. So, so true. I’ve learned the hard way how difficult posing is and have spent years trying to improve with modest effect. Good post.

  4. I love this video! I can be a little awkward in front of the camera but once I get comfortable (and inevitably start laughing), it’s usually so much fun!

  5. I could see how difficult it is! I myself, with the simple photos I take – in fact,, I pose – feel very awkward, but somehow I am getting used to, after so many years. Nevertheless, what makes me worried – not the weather, or angles, but the people watching. So I am always looking for veeeeery empty places 🙂 Not always possible 🙂 I did watch ANTM, didn’t know Tyra Banks wanted to show the difficults of the industry! Hope you have a great day!

  6. I have so much trouble posing for pictures, which is hilarious since I am a wedding photographer… I tell people to pose all the time, and I can hardly do it myself! Great post dear, very informational! <3 – http://www.domesticgeekgirl.com

  7. Oooooh thanks for this video heads up. I’m hopeless in front of a lens (you’ve probably noticed my super awkward poses bahahaha). I don’t imagine it will get any easier but there are ways to trick the camera sometimes. At least I tell myself that when I feel like we’ve captured a great shot only to be shut down by my friend for having “resting squinting face”

  8. Posing is definitely an art all on its own! I’m terrible at it, so practicing is definitely needed!

  9. The video is amazing! Thanks for sharing 🙂
