YYes summer has finally arrived here in the north east and that means we all want to glow with a “healthy” looking tan. And we all know that a tan via the sun is anything but healthy. Of course today we have many choices in achieving a sun-kissed look without the aid of the sun. The two most popular are spray tans, and self-tanners. I generally like to get three to five spray tans over the course of the summer and then use self tanners in between. Last summer I used a drug store brand but found that I did not get a tan that was really noticeable. It took days and days of use with minimal results. So this year I took it up a notch and decided to try something a step above the drug store brands. As I already use a number of Kiehl’s skin care products and find them effective, trying their Sun-Free self-tanner seemed like a no brainer. And I must say I was very happy with this moderately priced self-tanner. It is light and creamy and leaves behind no greasy residue. It also smells great and does not have that typical self-tanner oder. There is light scent left behind, but I don’t mind it, it has a light clean smell so I kind of like it. But the best part is that it gets results and it works quickly.
I used it for the first time this weekend, I had a friend in town from Seattle and we headed to Fire Island as she has never been there before. After all the pre-primping involved with a day at the beach I finished off with applying this pleasant self-tanner about twenty minutes before we due to leave. [blockquote]It had a light golden brown finish and did not overly build up on my knees or heels[/blockquote]We stopped for breakfast and then made our way to the beach. Of course as this was our first visit to the beach we were all pretty pasty but my friend made a comment about how I looked a little tan. I was surprised, as I literally had not been to the beach since last summer, and then I realized that it must be the self-tanner! It deepened a bit more as the day progressed and I ended up with a light but noticeable natural looking tan. There were no streaks and there was no orange tint. It had a light golden brown finish and did not overly build up on my knees or heels. Granted I applied it rather lightly as I had never used it before, but it strikes me as rather easy to use. I can see how it could be built up over time, and I like that it can be used for the face and the body so I do not have to buy two different products. The only caveat would be the size of the bottle. It is 5.0 fl oz and if you are going to use this on your face and body on a fairly regular basis it is not going to last too long. The cost for this self-tanner is $22.50, which is not too bad but I wish that Kiehl’s made a larger size. I would love it if they had an 8 or 10 oz size and charged $32-$34.00. But overall I highly recommend this product. I think it will work wonderfully on light to medium skin tones. If you have a darker complexion it may not be dark enough or you may need to use more of the product. If any of you have a darker complexion and have used this product, let me know how it worked for you. I would love to know.

I totally need to check this out as I love Keihls products.
I love that Kiehl’s doesn’t use harsh chemicals in their products and this self tanner sounds really nice. It’s cool that you can use it for face and body. I will definitely have to look into it once I’m done with my Karora self tanner.
that self tanner sounds awesome
great post
I guess this is the part where I consider myself as really lucky, I don’t need to invest in tanning products as I am naturally tanned. I was slightly fairer during winter last year but now I am very tanned, put me under the sun for half an hour and I’l brown up nicely. Haha! It’s also very strange that Westerners find tan to be healthy and beautiful whereas in Asia the fairer the person is the more beautiful she is to the society. Cultural differences and perceptions never cease to amaze me.

Sounds great!
Some of my family members question why I would use a self-tanner being tan, but that’s exactly why! When you get as tan as I do in the summer, even with using sunscreen, your tan lines are super noticeable.
XOXO
Kiehls makes some of our favorite products. Have to try this now. thanks for telling us about it!

Allie,
great review. I have ever tried a self tanner, opting for being pale instead. But recently i mixed old fashion bain de soleil with a god moisturizer and the orange glowy gelee did add shine and a bit of bronze! But this sounds good, too!

A sun-free self tanning product sounds really interesting! Alas, I’m more of a super sunblock kind of gal, but I could definitely check this out to recommend to friends!

They love self-tanners here in France, but I always have a hard time with the scent. Maybe this one will be the ticket!
Sounds really nice!
I’ve always been so afraid to try self-tanners for fear of streaking or looking orange. But this looks like a product I could actually use!
