The next step for me in my photographic evolution is purchasing some studio lights. There so many things to consider and so many options: a soft box, beauty dish, ring light, diffused light direct light—where does one begin? Well for me I think I am going to start out with a very basic light kit for shooting products. Right now I am totally shooting guerrilla style and it shows. Indoors with very little natural light from one window. So yeah, I am in need of some professional lights.
I did some research and I am thinking of going with this basic and very affordable light kit from Limo. You can get in on Amazon and it retails for $55.00. Seriously I can spend that on dinner and drinks easy. I think this a good kit to get started and get my feet wet—though preferably not at the same time. And for the price it is certainly affordable. Then once I get better I can upgrade to more expensive professional lights. I also want to get a ring light, a beauty dish, a soft box, a reflector, an off camera flash, an apple box…
In addition to learning how to shoot products I am also eager to learn now to shoot portraits indoors. This video by Jessica Kobeissi gives you a peek at what is like to shoot indoors with a direct flash for that J Crew catalog look. You can also check out this video which uses a ring light. Both of these shoots were done in a house or apartment so no expensive studio needed. Have any of you ever shot indoors or used a ring light? And if you do shoot indoors or for You Tube tutorials is there a light kit or light that you would recommend?

A few years ago, I bought a soft box light from Limo, and I really liked it 🙂

Wow that is a very affordable lighting kit! I shoot headshots sometimes and I still prefer natural lighting above all. I have a set of Lowel Ego lights that I use for products that also work pretty well for portraits.
I’m also thinking of investing in a bit more camera equipment this year. I want to be able to do some indoor shoots and unless it’s a super sunny day, the light doesn’t always translate well inside. Thanks for sharing some of the options I have for purchasing!
