Fashion trends: Leather Leggings (DYDI?)
Hello all! Today we are going to talk about another popular fashion trend that may not be for everyone…leather leggings. Much like crop tops, leather leggings are one of those looks that can go wrong very easily. And much like the crop top, leather leggings can look tacky and well, I am just going to say it – slutty. So keeping the slut factor in mind, if you are going to don a pair of leather (or pleather) leggings, keeping it fairly understated is probably the way to go. Personally I would never wear a pair of pumps or stilettos with leather leggings. I have seen it done well, but it can be tricky. A pair of flats or chunky low heeled boots helps to balance out the overtly sexy aspect of leather leggings. If you are going to wear a pair of heels I would keep it below three inches, and I would probably do a bootie. Another important thing to keep in mind when wearing any kind of legging, is to always make sure the bum is covered – long, lose, and slouchy are what you want to look for when paring a top with leather leggings. This top by Alexander Wang and this slouchy knit from Alice + Olivia are two examples of fun tops that will look great with leggings. And I LOVE these flats from Yosi Samra. If you are a regular reader of mine you know I love ballet flats but often find them uncomfortable. I always look for ballet flats with straps, and what I love about these is that the strap is not just there to help keep the shoe on your foot, but is also a statement in of itself. Genius, right? And this look with the leather leggings and flat sandals is genius too. So effortless – I love how comfortable and unaffected she looks, but still dressed up and fashion forward. If anyone knows who this is, give me a holler. I stumbled upon this photo on Pinterest and it was from one of those Tumbler sites that is just a huge post of hundreds images with little or no credits. I believe she is a working model and it was pinned a year ago so I am guessing it was from the SS 2013 fashion week shows.
So do you do it? Do you wear leather leggings? If not, would you wear them? They are fairly expensive anywhere from four hundred dollars, all the way up to three or four thousand dollars. Most are about a grand. If this is too steep for you there are also faux or pleather leggings – which are much cheaper, and can even be found for under fifty dollars. I am still on the fence about them, but I would probably be open to a faux leather pair to start. Who knows…I just may love them.
