MODEL BEHAVIOR—HARI NEF

Model Behavior - alimackin@gmail.com - June 5, 2017

I could have hid in Boston and lived at home for three years,” she says, “gone through my transition, taken voice lessons to make my voice more feminine, gotten gender reassignment surgery, and spent time to complete my transition before I made my debut in fashion or film, but I didn’t want to wait!

Unprecedented is a word we have been hearing quite a bit lately and for the most part it has been not been for all the best reasons. But in 2015 I can happily say that IMG models took the unprecedented step of signing it’s second but first with worldwide representation transgender model Hari Nef. And Hari a 24 year old graduate of Columbia University is not just another pretty face.

Hari has written for a number of publications such as Vice, Blackbook, and Dazed & Confused among others. She is also an accomplished actress appearing in indie theatre pieces and indie films but is best know for her role on Amazons’s Transparency as the vibrant Tante Gittel. Originally from Philadelphia Hari had come a long way and has walked for such fashion luminaries as Gucci, Eckhaus Latta and Hood by Air. She continues to model, act and stay true to her activism. Reaching out to her fans taking questions in Tumblr and commenting about her experience as she transitions in the public eye.

A true beauty for sure, it is no doubt we will be hearing from this gorgeous, brave and talented young woman for many years to come. To read an interview with Hari head to ComeTrend.com

model behavior–binx walton

Binx Walton, Model Behavior - alimackin@gmail.com - August 22, 2013

Androgynous, edgy, and fresh faced, Binx Walton has look that will not be easily forgotten. With celebrities donning the covers of fashion magazines and landing coveted brand spokesperson spots it is harder then ever for a new model to stand out. But some how I do not think this will be problem for Binx Walton. Like Coca Rocha and Cara Delevingne, Binx is not afraid to be herself and let her punky roots show. Binx grew up in Hawaii and Tennessee and was scouted three years ago at a pool party for her Mom’s reunion. She decided to wait three years before pursuing modeling – being a bit of a tom boy Binx wanted to enjoy her youth and longboard with the boys. Lucky for us she came around and the rest is as they is history. She has walked for Marc Jacobs, Versace, and Miu Miu among others and has also appeared in a number of high profile editorials. She is currently represented by NEXT Models as well as Next Paris and Amax in Nashville. And I for one am super excited to see what comes next for this quirky model!

Model Behavior – Taras Sereda

Clic Gallery, Model Behavior, Taras Sereda - alimackin@gmail.com - May 14, 2013

I just love multi talented people. And Taras Sereda  is one such person. He is a successful model and an accomplished artist. Born in the western Ukraine in a town called Kharko, he originally studied industrial design but became frustrated with having to spend the majority of his time sitting in front of a computer.  After leaving the Ukraine to model he also began to seriously pursue his passion – art.  He compares his work to Egon Schiele and credits his grandfather who is an artist himself with inspiring him to become an artist. He works with watercolors mainly and uses fellow models or friends as subjects. And art is not just a hobby for Taras, he shows his work regularly and he is part of an exhibit currently on display at Clic Gallery here in New York.  Lucky me, I live in New York and will be popping down to the gallery to see the his work in person. I know, don’t hate me because I live in New York!  If you do not live in New York you can visit Models.com to see more of Taras’s work, read an interview with him, and watch a video of Taras discussing his work.

Model Behavior – Liya Kebede

Lemlem, Liya Kebede, Model Behavior - alimackin@gmail.com - February 11, 2013

Beautiful, smart and conscientious Liya Kebede stands out among her peers for her distinctive looks and her philanthropy. She has worked for many high profile clients  such as H&M, Estee Lauder, Balenciaga and Bottega Veneta. She has appeared in Harpers Bazaar, In Style, Marie Claire as well as Vogue Italia. She has worked with and been shot by such well known photographers as David Roemer, Mario Sorrenti and Giampaolo Sgura to name just a few. It is a long list of high profile names and companies that represent affluence and good fortune. But Liya has not forgotten where she came from – born in Ethiopia, Liya wanted to share her success and give back to her homeland . However, she did not want to just donate funds she wanted to change peoples lives. Learning that traditional weavers in her homeland were losing their livelihoods due to decreasing demands for their products, Liya decided that she had to step up and do something. To that end, she started an apparel line in 2007 called Lemlem which means to flourish or to bloom. The company originally sold beautiful handwoven scarves produced by the traditional weavers of Ethiopia, Liya hoped this would lead to economic independence and keep the ancient art form of Ethiopian weaving alive. Well fast forward six years and it has helped to do just that. The company has expanded and now sells a full line of women’s apparel as well as home goods, accessories and children’s clothes. Be sure to stay tuned for a post on Lemlem in the near future. I love when I can report and write on such wonderful stories. I actually went to design school with someone from Ethiopia, and a number of years ago he entered a contest to redesign the official flag for the African Union and hold on to your hats folks…but guess what, he won!! I was so proud of him! You can read more about Yaddi here. Ok now back to Liya. She currently lives in New York with her husband and two small children and I am sure we will he hearing more from this inspiring model and entrepreneur.
