Show of hands, how many of you struggle with liquid liner? Liquid liner is a big trend right now and I have attempted multiple times to join this trend. But in addition to liquid liner not being the easiest to apply it also does not work well on thinner skin or older skin. And my skin is definitely on the thinner side, so yes the struggle is real.
All eye liner but liquid eye liner in particular can show ones age due to that it can make crepeiness more apparent, even if it is not that bad. Pencil liner is more forgiving and much easier to apply but it tends to wear off in a few hours—at least it does for me.
in addition to liquid liner not being the easiest to apply it also does not work well on thinner or older skin
So the other day I popped in to the new Blue Mercury store near Grand Central to pick up some new mascara, but I also walked out with Laura Mercier’s cake eye liner. Really you say? Yes.
I met a lovely makeup artist who works for Laura Mercier and we got to talking and I explained to her to my dilemma. She went on to tell me about Laura Mercier’s Tightline Cake Eye Liner. I have never tried cake eye liner, I just lumped it in with liquid liners and assumed it would be a no go. However I was pleasantly surprised by the results.
But with cake liner you use a very thin flat brush and then you dot in or press in it along the last line
With other liquid liners you are “drawing” on the line. With either a pointed brush or a pen like applicator. But with cake liner you use a very thin flat brush and then you dot in or press it in along the last line. You are not drawing it on, which is definitely easier.
It does take some practice though, and you will most likely have to use a magnifying mirror, but once you get the hang of it you will wish you had discovered this sooner. I love that I can get the liquid liner effect and I really love that it stays put and does not fade.
It comes in six shades including black, but the makeup artist steered me to the Bleu Marine which reads as black when applied, but it is less harsh on paler skin. I have yet to do a cat eye with it, still learning the ropes but I hope to soon.
Use micellar eye make up remove to clean your brushes. This works wonders and is not harsh on your brushes
*And an ALLIE NYC exclusive insiders tip? Use Micellar eye make up remove to clean your brushes. This works wonders and is not harsh on your brushes. I had already used this brush multiple times so it was stained blue but a few dips in the micellar water and it looked like I had just taken it out of the package. I used a micellar water from Simple which I picked up at the drug store.
And yes I also walked out of Blue Mercury with mascara as well, the item I had originally intended to purchase, I went with this defining mascara which doesn’t clump and it also doesn’t flake—a problem I had with the mascara I had previously been using. So it was good day for me, two great products and a whole new look!

I’ve never heard of this but I’m a huge fan of liquid liner so this sounds like a fun alternative!! Especially if it doesn’t fade, which my eyeliners always seem to do! Xx

I use a very fine liner brush from Sigma and I have the perfect wing every single time! Never heard of a cake liner before but I think it’s similar in concept. And good tip on cleaning the liner brush with micellar water, I do the same for mine.
This is so good to know about Allie! I have eyelash extensions an am afraid to use any products at the eylash line, but I think this would work! Sorry I could not meet you there.!

I’ve been wanting to try and use eyeliner with a brush, but I havent’ been bold enough to yet. It is really challenging to find a good liner that doesn’t rub off throughout the day though. I’d love to try this color. So pretty!

I’ve been swearing by Chanel cake liner for years to achieve the perfect tightline and I recently just discovered it’s been discontinued. I’ll have to look into this as a replacement since you like it so much.
